Put down that water glass.
Step away from the faucet. And get ready to be grossed out.
If you’ve listened to my past advice and made the switch from soft drinks to water congratulations, you’re definitely on the right track.
But if you skipped over the part where I told you about filtering your water it turns out there could be far more than you bargained for lurking in your H20.
Study reveals our waterways full of gross chemicals
A shocking study has revealed that the water chugging its way along through our national waterways is positively dripping with contaminants.
Along with a soup of so many chemicals that it would make a chemist cross eyed, the researchers also found drugs – including gender-bending hormones.
And if you’re wondering what kind of effect that could have on us just take a look at what it’s doing to the fish.
Gender-bending hormones are likely cause of mutations
According to the researchers the fish in 19 rivers in the Northeast United States have morphed into a muddled mix of male and female traits. The fish have taken on characteristics of both sexes,
De hecho, a stunning 85 percent of male smallmouth bass and 27 percent of male largemouth bass no longer have testes. Instead they are carting around FEMALE eggs.
The experts are still debating the actual cause of this sexual flip flop, but one theory keeps floating to the surface. The researchers are relatively sure it’s those hormones I mentioned earlier that are to blame.
Earlier studies on the effects of estrogen on fish have led the scientists to believe that the hormones that have found their way into our waterways caused the sexual confusion.
De hecho, a federal study in 2009 already had established that estrogen in our waterways put fish at a greater risk for disease and premature death.
So how’d they get there in the first place?
There are two main routes:
- Wastewater flushed from the homes of people taking hormone-laced drugs such as birth control pills. And yes, that means exactly what you think it means. People on these drugs pee out traces of the hormones and those traces eventually can end up in our rivers and streams.
- People literally disposing of unused drugs by flushing them down the toilet. (If you’re guilty of doing this, stop. No matter the drug find a pharmacy or facility near you that can accept them for disposal.)
It’s not just the hormones we have to worry about either. It’s the hormone-mimicking and endocrine-disrupting chemicals too.
Past research has already revealed that chemicals that mimic estrogen have a negative effect on wildlife. And one study linked these same creepy chemicals to heart development issues in fish.
And then there are the pesticides and other toxins they are finding floating around out there too.
You could be drinking a toxic soup with every sip
To answer the question you’re probably thinking right now, yes our drinking water IS treated here in the US. But if you think that’s any kind of guarantee that you’re not sucking down dozens of contaminants with every sip you’re wrong.
The truth is most contaminants slide right on through the filtering process. And the reason why they do might shock you all over again.
The EPA isn’t even looking for them!
You see in reality the EPA is only looking for a tiny fraction of the potential contaminants that could be dripping into your glass each time you turn on the faucet.
Think I’m exaggerating? I’m not.
The EPA searches for literally less than 100 of the thousands of potential containments they could be.
That’s why a 2013 study turned up well over a baker’s dozen of creepy unregulated chemicals in the tap water of cities all around the country. Chemicals such as herbicides, solvents, antibacterials, metals and more.
Ugh, it’s enough to turn you off of water forever. But don’t let it!
We need water to stay healthy, our cells crave it.
Just follow the advice I’ve always given… make the switch to water, but to keep those hormones and nasty chemicals out of your system filter it.
But don’t bother with those filters you can buy in your local grocery store, they won’t cut it. You’ll need to invest in a water distiller or a reverse osmosis filter.
