And now new research reveals how this humble inflammation-fighting vitamin can help you to avoid the leading cause of vision loss in seniors.
LOW vitamin D RAISES your macular degeneration risk
It’s vitamin D, and a study of older women finds that low levels of the sunshine vitamin can increase your risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by between 1.5 and 2.6 times.
If you’re genetically predisposed to this vision-robbing disease, vitamin D becomes even more important — because low levels will up your odds by 670 percent, according to the study in JAMA Ophthalmology.
There are a number of ways D can help fight the condition.
To start with AMD is actually, at its core, an overactive immune response to inflammation. Since D is an inflammation fighting superstar, it can help keep that response in check.
Vitamin D can also slow the excess growth of new blood vessels, a condition seen in AMD, especially in the late stages.
Slash the risk of losing your vision by 50%
That helps explain why several other studies have found similar benefits, including a groundbreaking 2013 paper that found proper D levels could slash your risk of AMD by up to 50 percent.
The only problem with vitamin D is getting it. Despite all the positive press in recent years, it remains one of the leading nutritional deficiencies in the nation and in much of the world.
And odds are, you’re not getting enough yourself — especially if you live in the northern half of the country.
But even folks here in sunny southern California fall short in part because many don’t spend enough time outside, where sun exposure can help the body produce its own D, or they cover up with sunscreen when they do go out.
That’s why I recommend a vitamin D supplement for everyone. The best dose for you will depend on your own personal risk factors, but I’ve found that most people need between 2,000 and 5,000 IU per day.
