Something incredible just happened. A leading mainstream health expert said the quiet thing out loud.
He admitted there is one simple, inexpensive, and NATURAL thing every healthy American can do that COULD help them stay that way in the age of the deadly COVID-19 coronavirus.
It’s not just keeping inside. And it’s not just taking protective “social distancing” measures when you do have to venture out.
Those things will still continue to be crucial to slowing the spread of the virus as well as protecting ourselves and each other.
But it turns out there’s one more thing you can try.
And if you’re a regular reader of Healthier Talk, there’s a good chance you’re ahead of the curve on this one… because you’re probably ALREADY taking this nutrient.
Helping you stay healthy during tough times
Yes, we’re talking about taking a nutrient – as in a simple vitamin. And let’s face it, it’s not often anyone in the mainstream will recommend that.
In fact, I can’t even tell you the last time I heard a prominent figure say out loud that a vitamin can help with ANYTHING, much less help support our health while the world faces a crisis like this.
But Dr. Tom Frieden, the infectious disease expert who spent nearly eight years as head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, says VITAMIN D just might help give you a leg up while others are fighting the infection.
Now let’s make one thing crystal clear right upfront. It’s NOT a cure, or even a treatment, of course. Not even close.
And vitamin D is not a magic weapon that can shield you from the virus, either. It’s about giving your body what it needs to stay as healthy as possible. And that’s especially true if you’re missing out on it now.
Low on vitamin D? Top up your levels TODAY
You see, Frieden wrote in a column for Fox News that “science supports the possibility – although not the proof – that Vitamin D may strengthen the immune system, particularly of people whose Vitamin D levels are low.”
He said that respiratory infections can lead to a nightmare in the body called cytokine storms, or when inflammatory cells go out of control and attack your organs. When that happens, it can lead to a higher death risk in people with coronavirus.
But vitamin D just happens to help regulate cytokines, potentially offering “some modest protection for vulnerable populations,” according to Dr. Frieden.
He also notes… correctly… that up to 40 percent of Americans are deficient in D, making it even more important to raise those levels.
Not long ago, many in the mainstream dismissed the notion of D supplements as fringe nonsense. But now, thanks to Dr. Frieden, it’s essentially mainstream advice too.
You make D from the sun, of course, but most people don’t get close to what they need from sunlight alone even in the best of times. Throw in a pandemic and more than 100 million Americans hiding indoors under “shelter in place” orders, and our D levels may drop even further.*
Frieden suggested between 800 and 2,000 IU per day. My doctor has me on 1,000. Your own doctor can help you figure out the best dosage for YOU based on your habits and your risk factors.
*UPDATE – 04/23/2020: The chief nutritionist at Public Health England, officially urged all Britons spending less time outdoors because of the coronavirus to supplement with vitamin D. Dr. Tedstone said people may not be getting all the vitamin D they need during lockdown to stay healthy.
