Humble vitamin C could combat senior slowdown
Talk about hiding in plain sight. This senior slowdown solution is literally right in front of us in the form of a nutrient we all know well… vitamin C.
Most of us would swear we’re getting plenty of it. But the reality is many folks fall short of optimal levels.
Now we’re not talking about scurvy-triggering deficiencies here, of course. But low enough levels that you’re not getting the maximum protection from this vital vitamin.
But the new study shows what can happen when you raise those sagging vitamin C levels. It doesn’t just lower your risk for seasonal infections like the common cold. It turns out it ALSO supports your aging BRAIN.
The new study focused on a group of young adults whose C levels were a little on the low side. That would be below the 50 μmol/L recommended by most guidelines.
Some of the volunteers were given a drink with 500 mg of vitamin C twice a day. While the rest got a look-alike placebo without the C.
Within a month, the volunteers taking the real-deal vitamin drink had raised their levels to right where they should be. And that led to a dramatic brain boost.
All-natural brain boost leads to better focus
The folks taking the C supplement ended up with a significantly better attention span. Plus, their ability to focus on work and complete tasks were measurably improved.
Now, as I mentioned, this study happened to be on younger adults. But it’s easy to imagine what that extra attention span and ability to focus could mean for those of us who are a little longer in the tooth.
The volunteers were also given cognitive tests. And while the vitamin C group didn’t get higher overall scores, something else just as important did improve. And that’s reaction time.
On average, the supplement group was able to react faster, delivering correct answers more quickly.
In the real world, that’s the kind of boost that could help you knock all those items off your to-do list, completing your errands without ever slowing down. And then maybe topping it off by beating your spouse at chess or a round of your favorite trivia game.
