There’s an old saying, “the eyes are the window to the soul.” But new research reveals they might be the window to something else too. Something much more ominous.
It turns out your eyes could help you spot a literal risk to your life.
Researchers say ignoring vision loss could be a disaster. Because according to two new studies, not caring for your peepers properly could mess with your mind and then land you in the morgue long before your time.
The first links poor vision to dementia. Which is devastating alone. But the second is even worse, showing how fading eyesight could lead to an early death.
But the research also reveals GOOD news. It confirms getting your eyes checked regularly and restoring lost vision could turn things back around and extend your life.
Protect your peepers to spare your life
A lot of things got overlooked during the pandemic. Everything from personal grooming to healthy eating habits got put on the back burner/
And trust me, I get it. My hair practically reaches my knees, and I don’t even want to talk about my comfort-food belly.
The shutdowns and a fear of going out forced us to decide what’s essential and what’s not. And for many folks, eye exams didn’t make the “essential” list.
But if you haven’t had a professional check your eyes in a while, it’s time to schedule that appointment. Because uncorrected vision loss doesn’t just give you a fit when you’re trying to read the label on your medicine bottle. It could ALSO lead to struggles in your brain and even a battle for your life.
The first study finds diabetes-linked eye diseases are linked to a stunning 61 percent jump in your odds of developing dementia. Age-related macular degeneration could boost that risk by 26 percent. And even common cataracts was linked to an 11 percent increase.
The second study makes the link between vision loss and death itself. Even mild vision loss could raise your odds of early death by 29 percent. And the more you let your vision go…, the worse it gets without being corrected, the more that premature death risk climbs.
In fact, with severe vision loss, you may be facing an astounding 89 percent jump in the danger of an early demise.
Take steps to correct your vision
But here’s the important thing. As disturbing as that research is, the second study offers also offers us a solution.
The authors note that about 80 percent of cases of vision loss can either be corrected or prevented. And, of course, that could stop the downward slide.
That’s why it’s so crucial to get that eye exam you’ve been putting off. And to take care of any other health issues that could be behind your worsening eyesight.
If you have diabetes, for example, good blood sugar control will slash your odds of developing retinopathy and similar disorders. And cataracts can be fixed with a simple outpatient procedure.
Plus, the nutrients lutein and zeaxanthin may help protect your vision and could slow age-related macular degeneration. Check out my earlier report 5 must have supplements to protect your vision for more nutritional tips.
And don’t forget the power of a good pair of glasses. Getting them when you need them or updating an old pair to match your current vision can make a world of difference. It will improve your day-to-day life and potentially reduce your dementia and premature death risks too.
