You hear it all the time. Perhaps you’ve even said it yourself. “Oh, I have a slow metabolism.”
If you’ve been doing everything “right” from eating healthy to exercising and you still find yourself battling your weight that might really be the case.
Your metabolism is all the processes your body undertakes to burn food and fat to fuel all your systems.
If you have a speedy metabolism, meaning it’s working efficiently, you typically don’t have to count calories. You can eat what you want and your body burns it off to make energy.
But if the numbers on your scale won’t budge no matter how hard you work… or worse they’re headed in the wrong direction… you could be battling a slow metabolism.
Genetics, of course, play a large part. But they’re not the only thing that could be putting the brakes on your metabolism.
Diet, environment, stress, thyroid problems and simply aging can put a hitch in your metabolism’s giddy up.
Is a slow metabolism slowing YOU down?
But how can you tell if it’s a slow metabolism or too many midnight snacks that you’re battling?
These six telltale signs can help you decide. If you’re experiencing any of them have a chat with your doc about thyroid testing.
1. Trouble losing weight:
The number one sign of a sluggish metabolism may be the one that has you reading this in the first place. And that is, despite all your efforts, you can’t seem to shed that spare tire.
If you’re cutting calories, exercising and getting enough sleep but still can’t lose weight, it could be a sign your metabolism isn’t working efficiently.
2. Packing on pounds:
Losing weight isn’t the only challenge you have to worry about with a slow metabolism. Unexplained weight gain is another telltale sign.
If you haven’t suddenly become obsessed with Oreos or recently sworn off exercise, but you’re still packing on the pounds, a crawling metabolism could be the cause.
3. You’re cold ALL the time:
We all have different comfort zones when it comes to feeling chilly. And when you can’t control the thermostat, such as when you’re work, feeling cold might not be anything out of the ordinary.
But feeling cold ALL the time, no matter what the situation, is a common sign of hypothyroidism. And since thyroid problems and metabolism problems go hand in hand, there’s a good chance your metabolism isn’t working at peak efficiency.
Is your hair starting to look like hay? Or maybe your skin as dry as the Sahara desert? Turns out a slow metabolism could be the culprit.
4. You’re having skin, hair or nail problems:
Dry skin, brittle nails and thinning hair can all be signals you have a slow metabolism.
A slow metabolism can affect your body’s ability to absorb all of the nutrients it needs to maintain healthy skin, nails and hair. Plus when your system slows to a crawl, you don’t sweat as much leaving your skin dry and flaky and your nails parched and brittle.
5. Feeling forgetful and blue:
Hypothyroidism can mess with your mood and your memory. When you’re not getting enough metabolism-regulating thyroid hormone, you can have trouble concentrating, remembering things and feeling interested in activities you normally like to do. (Hello vanishing sex drive… yet another sign.)
Since the symptoms of depression can be similar, be sure to let your doctor know how you’re feeling. He can help determine if your thyroid and slow metabolism are to blame.
6. Tired all the time:
Getting plenty of sleep but still feel like crawling back under the covers and staying there? Fatigue is a common sign of a slow metabolism.
When your thyroid isn’t working efficiently, your body isn’t making fuel efficiently either. The result can be a low energy, tired all the time feeling.
Even worse, that fatigue could also be a sign of a hidden heart problem. Low levels of thyroid hormone are associated with high blood pressure, increased homocysteine and reduced blood flow.
Other symptoms of low thyroid and a slow metabolism are muscle aches, frequent headaches, low sex drive, carb cravings, constipation and even balance problems (especially in older women).
Remember, if you have any of these telltale signs of a slow metabolism your first stop should be your doctor’s office. He can run tests to make sure your thyroid isn’t to blame.
