Most of us know they’re “good” for us. If pressed, some of us may even be able to offer up some sort of a definition such as it’s a molecule that prevents the oxidation of other molecules.
But in reality few of us really know much about antioxidants, including what they actually do and the best way to get them.
The cells in your body are constantly under assault and no matter whether it’s an infection, not having the nutrients it needs to stay healthy or something else entirely damage can occur.
At the most basic level an antioxidant can prevent or delay certain kinds of that damage to your cells.
When a molecule becomes “oxidized” it loses electrons and this process can produce what are known as free radicals. And while we think of free radicals as the “bad guys,” they’re actually often a normal byproduct of natural processes such as turning your food into fuel for your body or the effect sunlight has on your skin and eyes.
Free radicals can damage or kill a cell
But they can kick off a chain of events that eventually result in damage or even death to a cell.
You can think of free radicals as kind of like the hippos in the Hungry, Hungry Hippos Game. And if free radicals are the starving, hungry-all-the-time hippos the food they’re desperately scrambling for… the white marbles… are electrons.
The free-radical hippos have an insatiable appetite for electron marbles and they will steal them from any nearby substance they can get their greedy little hippo lips on. The problem is when they steal those electrons they can leave the substance they stole them from not quite the same.
The substance may be weaker somehow, its structure may be changed so it functions differently or it can even cause the instructions coded into a strand of DNA to be altered which could cause a cell to function differently than before.
Antioxidants “distract” free radicals to combat cell damage
And that’s where antioxidants come in. Antioxidants “distract” the free radical hippos by liberally handing out electron hippo treats to satisfy the hippo’s hunger so they will stop stealing them from elsewhere. We can extract some of these free-radical fighting antioxidants from the foods we eat such as beta carotene, vitamin E and vitamin C.
