You guys out there might refer to the extra padding around your middle as your “beer belly.” Ladies, you might prefer the far cuter “muffin top.” And then there’s the neutral “spare tire” that works for anyone.
But let’s face it. It doesn’t matter how you refer to your belly fat. Because, in the end, what you really want to call it is GONE.
That’s why it’s so frustrating that no matter how hard you try, you just can’t seem to get rid of it. But your luck may be about to change.
Research has revealed that one of the easiest exercise routines on the planet may also turn out to be one of the most effective. In fact, it’s so easy that it almost looks like you’re not exercising at all.
The movements are so slow that a sloth might look speedy by comparison. But in this case, slow and steady DEFINITELY wins the race.
I’m talking about simple movements which literally anyone can do, anytime and anywhere, with very little training. Yet, they can do as much for your waistline as sweating and grunting in a gym.
Ditch the no pain no gain philosophy
I’m convinced there are really only two kinds of people who are into that whole “no pain, no gain” philosophy.
- gym owners
Nobody actually likes it. But the gym owners… with a bit of help from the masochists… have convinced the world that you can’t get the health benefits of a workout without pushing yourself to the limit and beyond.
So most people don’t even bother to try. After all, who volunteers for more pain?
But new research exposes that pain approach for the lie that it is. Because the new study finds that one of the easiest possible exercises is all gain with NO pain.
The researchers focused on tai-chi, a form of exercise that uses super slow controlled movements. Tai-chi originated in China but has become increasingly common here in the US as folks flock to parks, rec halls, and senior centers to do the movements.
You’ve probably seen people doing tai chi before. The movements are so slow that it can look like you’re practicing for a “human statue” street performance. But as the study shows, they’re delivering BIG benefits.
SHRINK your waistline with this EASY ‘exercise’
Unless it’s hot out, you won’t even break a sweat doing tai chi. Yet the study of folks over the age of 50 finds that these movements can deliver the SAME fat-burning, stomach-shrinking benefits as so-called “real” exercises, including…
- strength training
In the new study, tai chi was put to the test against those other exercises in hourlong instructor-led workouts three times a week for 12 weeks. Plus, there was a third group that didn’t get any kind of exercise at all.
After 12 weeks, the folks who did nothing gained more than a third of an inch on their waistlines. The volunteers who did the “real” exercises lost about half an inch off their bellies. And the tai chi group shaved an impressive three-quarter of an inch of the old spare tire.
Plus, both exercise groups had improvements in cholesterol too. Pretty remarkable when you consider that no one went on a diet in this study. This was purely the effects of the regular activity.
If you’re interested in trying tai chi out, check with your local YMCA or senior center to see if they offer any classes. Or look online to find a group in your area.
You can also try tai chi at home. You’ll find literally hundreds of free videos on YouTube walking you through the basics. Search “tai chi for seniors” or “tai chi for beginners” to find some specifically suited to you.
