It’s not a symptom you would expect. In fact, it’s not one ANYONE expected.
But when it comes to the COVID-19 coronavirus infection tearing through the nation, we can toss expectations right out the window.
Because we’re dealing with a brand new virus in humans here. And it turns out this disease doesn’t always have the “classic” symptoms of a respiratory or flu-like infection.
Some of the signs in many of the virus’s victims ARE obvious. These folks KNOW they’re sick, with things like a fever or a cough.
But there are some symptoms that you’d never guess would be part of this nasty illness that’s now touched every state and territory in the nation.
And if you learn to spot them fast you can get help in a hurry rather than waiting for the more severe symptoms to show up. And it could possibly help you keep your loved ones safer too.
Think of them as early warning signals.
The STRANGEST symptoms of coronavirus yet
The COVID-19 coronavirus infection hits some people hard. They describe it as the worst flu of their lives. They have a high fever, pounding headaches, coughing, breathing struggles, chills, and more.
But other people report they had strange or unexpected symptoms, often before the worst of the illness kicks in. One of the more common ones we’re hearing about from folks battling the virus is a diminished sense of smell and taste or even a complete loss of one or both senses.
In other words, if you wake up and CAN’T smell the coffee, you’ve got a good reason to give the doctor a call right away.
A report from the UK found 60 percent of coronavirus patients had lost their sense of taste and/or smell. In Germany, it was about 66 percent. And in South Korea, nearly EVERYONE with the mild form of the infection reported these strange symptoms.
Here’s the important thing. In the German study, researchers found the loss of these senses happened EARLY in the infection, making it one of the FIRST warning signs. In one analysis, 60 percent of the patients who had the loss of senses said it started before hospitalization.
And there is good news too. Experts are now saying that this symptom often goes hand in hand with a MILDER case of the virus.
Have any of these warning signs? Here’s what to do…
But those aren’t the only unusual symptoms. Some folks report tummy troubles, including diarrhea. Others say they have fatigue… which is expected in flu-like illnesses, but with a difference.
These folks say the fatigue comes FIRST, before anything else, which makes it seem so mysterious. They feel fine, but then go for a simple walk… maybe even just to check the mail… and suddenly, they’re so exhausted they need a nap.
If you feel ANY of these surprise warning signs or ANY other unexpected symptoms, experts say you should take two steps.
- Call your doctor ASAP.
- Isolate yourself from the rest of your family.
Don’t go into the clinic and don’t go into the hospital unless you’re experiencing emergency symptoms, the doctor tells you to over the phone, or you can’t reach anyone who can tell you what to do.
Many hospitals and clinics are handling such a huge number of patients they’re becoming overcrowded. Plus, naturally, they’re also filled up with infected people. So to help you stay safe, they’re asking folks with milder symptoms, and “pre” symptoms, to keep away and isolate at home.
And, let’s face it, the last thing in the world you want is to get to a hospital, get tested and learn you DON’T have the coronavirus… only to get exposed and infected while you’re there.
So call your doctor or the hospital first and follow their instructions carefully. If they want you to rest at home, assume you DO have the infection even if you haven’t been tested and keep away from everyone else until you get the all-clear from your doctor.
