Everyone knows what happens when you have a heart attack. Después de todo, we’ve seen it a million times in movies and on TV.
You feel sudden, extreme crushing chest pain, you grab your chest and stumble to the phone and call an ambulance.
But what if you’re heart attack wasn’t so cinematic? What if you never felt a thing so you didn’t made that call for help because you never had any idea of the danger you were in?
Seem unlikely? Bien, new research reveals it’s not. De hecho, close to half of all heart attacks… 45 percent… are of the “silent” variety.
And while they’re just as dangerous as the dramatic, chest-clutching ones, the silent heart-attack sufferer doesn’t experience any of the obvious outward signs and symptoms we’ve grown to expect. But the internal damage is identical, with the same dangerous scarring.
The silent heart attack triples your death risk
That’s a real problem, because according to the study published in the journal Circulation that sets silent heart-attack sufferers up for TRIPLE the death risk from heart disease. And to make matters worse they’re a third more likely to die from any cause.
If you’re a senior guy you’re the most at risk for these silent killers, with one study last year finding evidence of a silent attack in 13 percent of senior men and 2.5 percent of senior women.
But ladies, you’re not off the hook because the new study revealed that while women son less likely to have silent heart attacks they’re more likely to die from them.
Hidden signs of a silent heart attack
It may seem like this is a problem without a solution. Después de todo, if there are no heart-attack symptoms there’s nothing you can do right?
It turns out you just need to change what it is you’re looking for. Because while silent heart attacks don’t cause that intense chest-crushing pain we associate with a heart attack they typically do come with some milder symptoms that few of us would ever associate with a heart attack.
Silent heart-attack symptoms to be on the lookout for include…
|Muscle pain in the back|
|Muscle pain in the chest|
When evidence of a silent attack is found later some folks do recall feeling what they often identify as a mild muscle strain—like you might feel after you overdo during a workout—in their chest. But in reality it was a dangerous heart attack.
En otras palabras, the lesson to learn here is if it appears suddenly with no obvious cause go and get yourself looked at. And don’t be a pushover in the ER either. If they aren’t taking you seriously insist on an EKG before you leave.
Help “heart attack proof” yourself in 3 steps
But don’t wait until you have a heart attack to do something about protecting yourself from these killers. Make some changes starting today to reduce your chances of having a heart attack… silent or not.
1. Stop smoking:
Experts say around 20 percent of heart disease deaths are linked to cigarette smoking. Smoking is a major cause of coronary artery disease and your risk for CHD and heart attack skyrockets with the number of cigarettes you smoke. Cut back today and make a plan to quit smoking as soon as possible..
2. Lose weight:
Carrying around extra fat, especially around the belly (intra-abdominal fat), has a negative effect on your metabolism, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar all of which are contributing factors to heart disease. Dropping some weight can help reduce your risk for heart attacks.
3. Try supplements:
Consider taking heart supporting supplements. Good choices for protecting your heart include…
- Fish oil
- Coenzyme Q10
No matter your age, weight or habits you can become the victim of a heart attack. Never ignore symptoms and if you aren’t feeling quite right dial 911, you could be saving your own life.
