There’s been a lot of buzz about telomeres in the past few years, and for good reason. Unraveling their mysteries means unlocking the answers to how we can literally halt aging.
In fact, discovering them and their role in aging is as close to the legendary Fountain of Youth as we’ve ever gotten.
Telomeres are the little caps that sit on the end of each and every one of your chromosomes. The easiest way to picture a telomere is to envision a shoelace.
At each end of the lace is a hard little tip. That tip is a lot like a telomere. It protects your chromosomes and keeps them from getting all tangled up with other nearby chromosomes.
But as you age and your cells continue to divide those little caps get worn down, getting thinner and thinner each time. One day the telomeres get so short that the cell simply can’t divide any longer and it essentially dies.
And like a fuse on a bomb, the shorter and shorter your telomeres get the closer and closer you get to the devastating diseases of aging such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and heart disease.
How a juicer could add YEARS to your life
We’d all like to slow down, or even stop, the steady march of time. And now a group of researchers say we might be able to do just that.

Yes I’m serious. According to a study published in the European Journal of Nutrition this “recipe” could be all it takes to fight back against aging.
The key is to grab the right kinds of produce.
You’ll want to focus on fruits and veggies that are rich in carotenoids such as carrots, tangerines, papaya and kale. Because, it turns out, that foods rich in three specific carotenoids can work together to literally extend your telomere length by an impressive 8 percent!
The three age-defying nutrients are…
According to the researchers alpha-carotene alone can beef of your telomeres 1.76 percent, beta-cryptoxanthin will bump up telomere tips by 2.02 percent, and beta-carotene increases the protective caps by 2.22 percent. Combined they work even better than alone.

Antioxidants could be the key to anti-aging
We know that oxidative stress fast forwards telomere shrinkage (and aging). So it makes sense that foods rich in antioxidants—like those listed above—might be able to put the brakes on the process.
Carotenoid-rich antioxidant don’t just lengthen telomeres either. They can also fight cancer.
In fact, in one comprehensive study Harvard researchers crunched the data from an incredible 80 percent of the studies ever published on carotenoids.
They discovered that women who had the highest levels of these nutrients in their bodies were 15 to 20 percent less likely to ever receive a devastating breast cancer diagnosis.
And if your mom ever told you to eat your carrots to keep your eyesight sharp she was onto something. In another Harvard study, researchers found that alpha-carotene and beta-carotene can slash your risk of age-related macular degeneration up to 35 percent.
The message is clear, eat your carotene–rich fruits and veggies and you might be able to slow aging and perhaps even add years to your life.
Oh, and no you don’t really need to juice them all. In fact eating them in a variety of ways will deliver the most nutrients and keep you from getting bored. But a homemade nutrient-packed fruit and veggie juice IS a delicious treat!
