That sound you just heard? Oh, that was just three decades of misguided conventional medical advice on statins being flushed down the toilet.
A major new study has taken the very backbone of modern mainstream cholesterol advice and snapped it like a twig.
The research revealed that the cholesterol drugs they practically shove down our throats by the time we reach 50 are based on bunk. Oh, and the diet advice? Bogus too.
The core idea behind nearly all conventional cholesterol advice is to “watch your cholesterol,” both in your diet and in your blood. And if your levels rise, they insist you’ll need to take statins to bring them back down.
Except the new study finds none of this is true. And if this sounds familiar, there’s a reason for that. It’s what I’ve been telling you all along.
The TRUTH about LDL cholesterol
As I’ve shared with you before, the most common advice we get about cholesterol is so twisted – and so over-simplified – that it’s practically worthless.
Now, the new study backs that up in a BIG way.
The research finds that in many cases, you can give up the foods you love, swallow every statin pill they throw your way, and bring your LDL cholesterol levels right down to exactly what they want. And the only thing you’ll get for it is a smile from your doctor when he looks over your blood tests.
Oh, you wanted heart protection? A lower chance of heart attack and stroke? A lower risk of DYING from cardiovascular problems?
Sorry…but you likely won’t get ANY of that, according to the new research.
The study finds statin drugs do cut cholesterol, as promised. But those drug-induced low LDL levels won’t give you any significant cardiovascular protection. In fact, if there is a benefit, it’s likely to be “quite modest” and not at all what doctors and patients alike have long assumed.
There’s a simple reason for this. As I’ve explained many times before, despite the hype, LDL cholesterol isn’t the big, bad monster we’ve all been told it is.
Most LDL particles are big bouncy things that float harmlessly through blood vessels… like beach balls being tossed around in summer. The real danger is in the small, dense particles damaged by oxidation.
Cutting cholesterol using statins generally flushes out mostly those big harmless particles. The little nasties tend to stick around and continue to embed themselves in blood vessel walls, where they can contribute to hardening and blockages.
Ditch the statins and try THIS instead
In other words, even when the statins “work” and lower LDL levels, they still won’t do much to lower your heart risk. And dropping them too low can backfire, putting you in danger. (See my earlier report, “Could your ‘perfect’ cholesterol KILL you?” for more on that frightening twist.)
But you CAN target those dangerous particles yourself. And, believe it or not, you can do it without statins or new meds of any kind.
You can start by cutting processed foods and empty carbs out of your diet. These foods can increase oxidation. And with that, levels of those small, dense, and dangerous LDL cholesterol particles rise too.
And while you’re at it, go ahead and add more antioxidant-rich foods to your meals. Some great choices include…
- wild blueberries
- strawberries
- Granny Smith apples
- plums
- red kidney beans
- artichokes
- pecans
- black beans
- dark leafy greens
Also, consider taking a supplement with a proven antioxidant such as astaxanthin. An antioxidant supplement can help head off the process that damages cholesterol particles, so you end up with less of those little dense nasties floating around your blood vessels.
