Did you know that you may be gaining pounds by losing ZZZs? A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicates that “sleep restriction could be a factor that promotes obesity.” Study participants ingested an average of 560 calories more when they were sleep-deprived than when they were allowed to get a full eight hours of sleep.
A study conducted by the University of Chicago found that not only does lack of sleep increase your appetite, but it also increases your desire for unhealthy types of foods such as sweets like cookies and candy, salty foods like chips and nuts, as well as starchy foods like bread and pasta. And unfortunately 40 percent of the population in the United States is believed to be moderately to severely sleep-deprived, according to James B. Maas, M.D.
Sleep deprivation can cause an increased risk of fibromyalgia, diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as nausea and dizziness, aching muscles, memory lapses and slowed word recall, headaches, hallucinations, dry mouth, involuntary rapid eye movement, irritability and yawning.
So you can see that getting enough sleep is not just a luxury—it’s a major factor that can help you maintain optimal health. And yes, more sleep could help you lose weight, but it could also reduce your risk of serious health issues later in life.
