Imagine dodging death. Slashing your risk of dying by 45 percent.
And all it takes is one small change.
It’s not a pill. Or surgery. And it doesn’t even require you to give up something you love like juicy burgers or an occasional cigar with your friends
In fact, this one small change won’t cost you a dime.
I bet you want to know more, right?
Well, it turns out if you’re kind of a homebody like me… and you tend to prefer your own couch to a night out on the town… simply replacing a small amount of your sitting time with some physical activity can make a DRAMATIC difference.
In other words, not only can you cut your chances of dying prematurely NEARLY in half. You can do it without making any real sacrifices.
Of course. it’s no newsflash that spending too much time sitting isn’t great for your health. But a newly published long-term study took things a bit further.
It ALSO looked at the physical activity you’re missing out on when you’re surfing the couch instead of moving around.
And the researchers found that replacing sitting with even a little light activity could make a BIG difference.
Slash your risk of an early death
For the study researchers poured through data gathered over fourteen years from over 92,500 volunteers in the ACS’s Cancer Prevention Study II.
Participants were asked to report on their…
- sitting time
- time spent doing light physical activity
- amount of moderate to vigorous activity
Everyone expected that keeping your seat IN a seat too much would be linked to increased health problems, of course.
But what they didn’t anticipate was the effect swapping out just a bit of sitting time with some physical activity could have.
For folks who were the least active, REPLACING just 30 minutes of sitting time with LIGHT physical activity reduced their early death risk by an impressive 14 percent.
Make that 30 minutes of movement moderate to vigorous activity… like, say a brisk walk or swimming laps… and death risk PLUMMETED by 45%.
Live longer with this 30-minute SWAP
Not a couch potato? You can STILL benefit from the swap.
Folks who were already moderately active had their death risk drop six percent when they replaced 30 minutes of sitting with light activity.
And 30 minutes of moderate or vigorous physical activity instead of sitting reduced premature death by 17 percent.
In other words, the key to living longer isn’t just getting more exercise. And it’s not just sitting less. It’s REPLACING some of that sitting time with physical activity.
Make a move to make death risk drop
If you want to fill that time with some formal exercise, go right ahead.
But if you prefer, you can claim the same benefits with other physically challenging activities too.
Need some inspiration? How about one of these…
- washing all the windows in the house
- dusting your baseboards
- playing a game of catch with your grandchild
- taking the dog for a long walk
- rearranging the pantry
- giving the refrigerator a scrubbing
- mowing the lawn or weeding the garden
You get the idea. Anything that keeps you moving for the whole half an hour, and replaces sitting time, will do the trick.
So what are you waiting for? Get moving.
