Raise your hand if this has ever happened to you.
You sit down to do something like check your Facebook page or watch a new TV show. And when you look up, HOURS have slipped by.
These days we have hundreds of TV channels to choose from. Countless websites to visit. And a never-ending stream of social media posts to read.
Which means it’s easier than ever to get caught spending way too much time with your seat IN the seat.
And when it’s not the endless entertainment that has you sitting around, it’s the lack of energy caused by the meds your doc has you on.
Many drugs can leave you feeling lethargic and sleepy. And that includes prescriptions for blood pressure, allergies, anxiety, depression, diarrhea, and pain.
The trouble is all that time spent lounging is downright hazardous to your health.
It can more than double your risk for heart disease, leading to chest pain and heart attacks. And it raises your risk of making an early exit from this Earth by 50 percent.
Too much sitting also increases your chances of developing high blood pressure, high blood sugar, diabetes, and a big belly.
But there’s a very simple cure.
And don’t worry I’m NOT going to tell you to start spending all day every day at the gym. In fact, there’s a 5 Minute Fix that could turn things around fast, improving your cholesterol, blood sugar, and more.
5 Minute Fix sent triglycerides & blood sugar tumbling
Researchers at Western State Colorado University uncovered EXACTLY what it takes to slash the health hazards caused by sitting for long periods.
For their small, but groundbreaking study they worked with a group of 13 volunteers with an average age of 74.
All the participants spent at least six hours a day sitting. Most had unhealthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels. And about half of the volunteers had high blood pressure, too.
The researchers had them take small breaks from sitting either once an hour or every two hours. They were asked to walk around, stretch, or do other simple movements that were similar to tackling everyday household chores.
And incredibly they found taking a 5-minute break from sitting, once per hour, made a SIGNIFICANT difference. Hitting this sweet spot led to the biggest health improvements.
Folks in the group that followed the 5 Minute Fix plan watched their…
- HDL (“good”) cholesterol increase by 21 percent
- triglycerides plummet by 24 percent
- blood sugar plunge by 8 percent
Can’t be interrupted so often? Taking 10-minute breaks, every two hours, was almost as good. The key is to avoid long, uninterrupted periods of sitting.
Take a short break from sitting EVERY hour
So go ahead and set a timer and start unseating your seat for at least five minutes every hour.
Stumped by what to do to keep yourself moving for five minutes? Try one of these easy activities…
- stroll around the house while chatting on the phone
- walk the dog (he’ll LOVE all the extra attention!)
- do a few stretches
- load the dishwasher or put away the dishes
- wash a window
- sweep, mop, or vacuum the floor
- change the bed sheets
- tidy up a closet or junk drawer
The 5 Minute Fix won’t replace your regular exercise routine, of course. But it will SLASH the health hazards that come from sitting too much.
