Researchers at Western State Colorado University uncovered EXACTLY what it takes to slash the health hazards caused by sitting for long periods.
For their small, but groundbreaking study they worked with a group of 13 volunteers with an average age of 74.
All the participants spent at least six hours a day sitting. Most had unhealthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels. And about half of the volunteers had high blood pressure, too.
The researchers had them take small breaks from sitting either once an hour or every two hours. They were asked to walk around, stretch, or do other simple movements that were similar to tackling everyday household chores.
And incredibly they found taking a 5-minute break from sitting, once per hour, made a SIGNIFICANT difference. Hitting this sweet spot led to the biggest health improvements.
Folks in the group that followed the 5 Minute Fix plan watched their…
- HDL (“good”) cholesterol increase by 21 percent
- triglycerides plummet by 24 percent
- blood sugar plunge by 8 percent
Can’t be interrupted so often? Taking 10-minute breaks, every two hours, was almost as good. The key is to avoid long, uninterrupted periods of sitting.
