Peas and carrots. Peanut butter and jelly. Ham and cheese.
The kitchen holds no shortage of power couples. But when it comes to your health, sometimes it’s the lesser known pairings that really deliver the goods. And nothing drives this point home like the latest research on red wine and green tea.
This new study looked at two compounds in particular: EGCG, prominent in green tea—and tannic acid, prominent in red wine. Researchers used cultured cells to assess the effects of these powerful phytochemicals in the lab.
And the results blew everyone away. Their experiments showed that EGCG and tannic acid are able to neutralize the effects of adenine, phenylalanine, and tyrosine.
And why does that matter? Well, all three of these metabolites contribute to the formation of amyloid plaques in the brain. And those plaques are a prominent calling card for Alzheimer’s and other serious neurodegenerative diseases.
In other words: Keep a cup of green tea in one hand, and a glass of red wine in the other, and you’ll be giving your brain some serious natural protection against some of the most devastating brain diseases in the book.

But Alzheimer’s prevention isn’t the only reason to drink up, of course. Both of these beverages come with an impressive resume of health benefits.

1. They could extend your life.
Green tea may cut your risk of early death by as much as ten percent, experts say. And red wine? Well in addition to tannic acid, it’s also packed with resveratrol—one of the most potent longevity-boosters we’ve ever uncovered.
2. They help you manage your weight.
Among its many talents, green tea supercharges your metabolism, helping to keep your waistline in check. But red wine is no slouch in this department, either.
Studies show that the resveratrol in red wine can help transform unwelcome “white fat” into metabolically active “beige fat.” And that energy-burning beige fat can help you stay slimmer. For example, in an animal study mice that received a resveratrol supplement gained 40 percent less than their pudgy peers despite being on the same high fat diet.

Red wine, meanwhile, boosts blood vessel health and balances blood pressure. Ladies just stick to one glass. And guys you can have a second if you like.
