Everyone talks about fat loss and how to best achieve it.
If we use the definition of “secret” as something you and I don’t know, then there are a lot of secrets out there! I don’t know what the future of the economy is. I don’t know what secret political deals are being made in the corridors of power. I don’t know where to invest my ever-shrinking savings.
But I do know the secret to real sustained fat loss and I am going to give it to you right now, in no uncertain terms: The secret to sustained fat loss lies in Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR from here on in!).
For the rest of this article, I will be explaining how and why and I am going to use the ever-popular myth busters approach to help prove my point.
True or false: You can lose weight by dieting alone.
Answer: True, sort of.
If you sustain a calorie deficit (eat less than you take in) of 300 to 500 calories a day you will lose weight. At some point though, you have reduced your body mass by “x” amount and it will reestablish a new “calorie set point” for the “new” you.
Simply put, the thinner (and less muscular!) you get, the fewer calories you need. So you will have to continuously reassess your calorie needs, based on your new body weight. And guess what; you will be taking 300 to 500 calories a day from an ever shrinking total calorie count.
At some point, your brain will intervene through a complex thermostatic mechanism we call your “fat stat”, which is really a combination of your energy thermostats, your water thermostats, your body composition thermostats and your appetite thermostats and it will do something nasty to your weight loss attempts. It will slow down your metabolism.
This is the main reason why really aggressive dieting is doomed to failure. We are genetically programmed with an “on switch” for eating that is much stronger than our "off" switch. Our primitive survival centers, buried deep in the center of the brain, don’t really know where the next meal is coming from and live in a kind of constant “fear of starvation”. As part of the anti-starvation mechanism, we turn down our Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) and start to preserve our resources, which are all the things we build from the three big food groups: fats, proteins and carbs.
Now here is the ultimate insult. Our body recognizes, at this very basic primitive level, that fat is our most valuable resource when it comes to preserving our future. Fat stores calories a lot more efficiently than carbs or proteins.
As a matter of fact, it is pretty much the ONLY way we can store the bulk of our long-term calories. So, it defends fat like it was your life’s blood, in a low calorie situation, like aggressive very low calorie diets. This pretty much happens no matter what else you do, including injecting small or large doses of hormones like HCG!
Now let’s be honest, the chances of you starving are pretty slim, but you might get roped into an ultra low calorie fad diet, if you are not careful. You might also do one of the two other situations that commonly cause the RMR to slow down: excessive aerobic exercise and lack of sleep.
I have given you some real “food for thought” today so I will pick this up again in Part 2, but for now, remember this — RMR is the key to fat loss.
Dr. Dave Woynarowski, MD, was born in the 1950s in the heart of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Raised in a family of doctors and scientists, “Dr. Dave” continued the tradition, graduating from Temple Medical School in the 1980s, after earning his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Pennsylvania with a dual major in Biology and English.
After completing his Residency in Internal Medicine, Dr. Dave passed the Internal Medicine Boards and joined his father who had been practicing Family Medicine for three decades.
Dr. Dave later embarked on a worldwide pursuit, researching the best-of-the-best in anti-aging medicine. His exhaustive search has made him one of the foremost authorities is preventative health, anti-aging, and nutritional supplements. For example, he may have more scientific research in his medical library on the health benefits of pharmaceutical grade fish oil than any other person in the world. In addition to study and research, Dr. Dave began the development of a new category of nutritional supplements, formulated from his expertise as a physician, and made from only pharmaceutical-grade ingredients.
"“I traveled the globe for many years, searching the four corners of the earth and left no stone unturned,” says Dr. Dave. “What I found is that most people can be significantly healthier through the use of high quality, properly formulated supplements. The problem was that most of the available products did not use a high enough grade of active ingredients, or did not combine the correct amount of ingredients for a multiple-pronged rather than a single-focus approach to the issue. So I developed Dr. Dave’s Best to meet the need."
Dr. Dave is also co-author of "The Immortality Edge" a book dedicated to teaching everyone about the newest hottest field in anti-aging technology, Telomere Biology and giving practical proven advice for better health and a longer life that everyone can use RIGHT NOW!
