Q: Dear Healthier Talk,
I have a bit of an earwax problem.
Mostly it’s just annoying. But sometimes my ears get so clogged up I feel like I don’t hear as well.
My doctor says it’s nothing to be concerned about. He just removes the clogs and sends me on my way.
Any idea what could be causing it?
Is there anything I can do to stop the buildup, or do I just need to live with it?

A: Dear Can’t Hear You,
Many earwax issues can be traced back to an essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency.
And unfortunately most conventional medicine docs overlook this common cause.
EFAs, including omega-3s and omega 6s, do a lot more than just keep your ears unclogged, of course.
They can help…
- reduce your risk of heart disease,
- fight off diabetes
- help you maintain brain health (and fight dementia),
- reduce inflammation,
- and even fight aging.
Raise your essential fatty acids with food
You can raise your essential fatty acid levels, and perhaps unclog your years, by making a few diet changes. The foods highest in EFAs are cold water fish including…
Look for wild-caught (not farm-raised) varieties.
Other foods to add to your diet to raise your essential fatty acid levels include…
- Olive oil
- Dark leafy vegetables
Beat back stubborn earwax with supplements
If you’re still experiencing earwax troubles you can try a supplement. A combination of fish oil and flax oil often works well to maintain your omega-3 and omega-6 balance.
You can find both fish oil and flax oil in pills in your local health food store or online. Take them as directed by the manufacturer.
Or you can get them in liquid form and take a tablespoon of each several times throughout the day until your earwax problem resolves.
It also a good idea to take in extra vitamin E, mixed tocopherols, whenever you supplement with EFAs (typically 800 IU a day for the first 2 months or so and then tapering down to 400 IU daily).
Before you begin, check in with a natural-health-oriented doctor to make sure he’s on board with your earwax elimination program.
