It’s no newsflash that eating fresh, whole foods packed with plenty of natural fiber is good for your health.
Studies show dietary fiber reduces our risk for obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. It can help improve our cholesterol, boost our bowel health, and help regulate our blood sugar.
There’s a pile of research to prove it. And besides, you know you just FEEL better when you eat better.
But there are two unfortunate facts about the typical Western diet…
- It doesn’t contain nearly enough natural fiber
- It includes far too many highly processed foods
And we pay the price with our health.
But these negatives smelled a lot like an opportunity to Big Food.
What if they could claim their over-processed food was actually GOOD for you? And what if they could LEGALLY market their processed foods as PROMOTING good health?
If they somehow managed to pull THAT trick off it would be like printing money. So that’s precisely what they did… cha ching!
Highly processed foods are healthy? Hogwash!
And that research I mentioned earlier? It’s what helped them do it.
You see they figured if they dumped a bunch of fiber into their highly processed products, they could start making the same health claims any actually healthy, high-fiber, whole food could.
And because of a recent FDA rule change, technically, they could.
The studies say fiber promotes good health. So they can say the new, fiber “enriched” versions of their foods do too.
The trouble is they took a cheap shortcut. And it turns out it’s one that could have DIRE consequences for your health.
They “enriched” their junk foods with highly-refined soluble fibers such as inulin.
And now researchers are saying a steady diet of these foods could give you liver cancer.
A diet high in REFINED fiber triggered liver cancer
The joint team of researchers from Georgia State University and the University of Toledo stumbled onto the truth accidentally.
They had set up an animal experiment to find out if a diet enriched with highly- refined inulin fiber could fight off obesity complications.
To everyone’s surprise, some of the mice soon developed jaundice, a red flag for liver problems. But the researchers were shocked when after just six months many of the unfortunate critters had developed full-blown liver cancer.
Processed foods HARM your health
In other words, the same shortcut Big Food is making with their so-called “healthy” processed foods could be sending your risk for liver cancer skyrocketing.
Don’t fall for it. Over-processed junk doesn’t magically transform into a healthy food merely because manufacturers dump refined fiber into it. Despite the deceptive packaging.
Lucky for us getting the health benefits of soluble fiber couldn’t be simpler. Fill up your grocery cart with plenty of fresh organic fruit, vegetables, beans, and legumes.
Some good choices include black beans, steel cut oats, Brussel’s sprouts, lima beans, apples, avocados, broccoli, pears, nectarines, peas, apricots, and strawberries.
In fact, you can transform your health, and slash your risk for cancer, in two easy steps
- Dump the highly processed foods from your diet
- Stick mostly to the outside aisles when grocery shopping, focusing on fresh and organic produce, meats, and dairy
“Enriched” junk foods are STILL junk foods. Big Food is once again putting profit over people. Refuse to become their next victim.
