You didn’t need a crystal ball to see it coming with probiotics. After all, it’s a well-established pattern in conventional medicine.
First, they start off by flat-out dismissing any natural therapy. Next, they ramp things up with attacks. They call the natural solution ridiculous, useless, or, worst of all, dangerous. And eventually, one day, they join us.
But here’s the catch. When conventional docs finally do get on board, they act as if it was their idea all along.
Right now, you can see that last phase happening in real-time with probiotics. Because conventional medicine experts are now embracing this vital pillar of natural health that they once routinely dismissed.
Probiotics can naturally help support…
- digestion
- immune function
- mood
- nutrition
- and more
Getting these benefits is pretty easy, too. In fact, as one TV doc who’s totally on board now shows, it could start with a pickle.
How a pickle could help your health
Pickles are a popular snack here in America. But did you know there’s a city in Michigan that liked them so much they used to have a pickle parade every year?
That’s not even the weirdest part, though. That prize goes to the parade that was a central part of the city’s Christmas celebrations.
No one’s quite sure how the pickle became associated with Christmas in the first place. Many folks say it’s a German tradition. But my own family from Germany has never heard of it. (Trust me, I’ve asked.)
Others say it started with German immigrants in America, which I suppose is just as likely as any other explanation.
But somewhere along the way, pickles got linked to Christmas for some folks. And as part of the tradition, families would hide a pickle ornament on the tree for the kids to find on Christmas morning.
However, if people knew the truth about pickles… about the real benefits of the probiotics they’re getting in every crunchy bite when they eat the right kind… we’d probably be celebrating them all year long. Heck, we might even have a pickle parade in every city.
The process that turns a cucumber into a pickle is almost magical. Because it doesn’t just transform a ho-hum veggie into a flavor-packed superstar. The fermentation process also leaves them loaded with gut-boosting bacteria.
CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta, who is as mainstream as they come, recently told Medscape he eats something fermented every day – usually a pickle – to enhance his own gut bacteria.
It was tacked on at the end of the interview and treated as a funny little closing line. But in reality, that’s not just sound advice. It’s also evidence of a significant shift in conventional medicine’s attitude about gut bacteria’s vital role in our overall health.
The mainstream does a 180 on probiotics
Conventional medicine has never outright dismissed the existence of gut bacteria…. good and bad… of course. But they’ve treated your gut flora more like an arranged marriage. As if you and your gut bugs are stuck with each other, and that’s that.
Even Dr. Gupta said he’s learning about the topic himself. Like when researchers told him that 80 percent of the immune system is in the gut.
“When I started talking to immunologists about the importance of the microbiome, they all recommended eating fermented foods,” he said. “It’s so easy to do, and my family and I incorporate these foods every day – we’ll eat things like kimchi or coleslaw, but pickles are the best!”
Pickles are pretty neat. I’ll hand him that. Just make sure you’re picking up the naturally fermented kind without vinegar to get the probiotics you’re looking for.
A brand I like that’s available in some grocery stores is Bubbies. They have a store locater online to find where they’re sold near you. Or you can order pickles online.
Yogurt is another excellent source of probiotics. Go for the unsweetened Greek kind. And naturally fermented sauerkraut is another great option.
But one of the best probiotic sources of all is the one that most conventional medicine doctors still refuse to say out loud. And that, of course, is a supplement.
A supplement will ensure you get consistent levels of all the right strains. It can take some time to improve your gut-bug balance, so getting a daily dose of the good bugs is vital. In fact, in my opinion, probiotic supplements aren’t a luxury. They’re essential.

Then, have a pickle anyway. The parade, however, is optional.
