Probiotic labels can be downright confusing. After all, they’re written in another language.
And let’s be honest, that high school Latin doesn’t really seem to help much.
The good news is that even if you don’t recognize all the strain names on the ingredient label, you can be sure they’re all beneficial.
But that DOESN’T mean they have all the same benefits.
In fact, we’re learning more every day about the specialized benefits of specific probiotics. Take Lactobacillius casei, or L. casei, for example.
I’ve told Healthier Talk readers about this special bug before. When partnered with kissing cousins L. acidophilus and B. bifidum, research shows it could help fight anxiety and depression.
Plus, researchers say it can also help calm the inflammation and pain that goes hand in hand with rheumatoid arthritis.
But it turns out those aren’t the only benefits of this bug. Another study has revealed L. casei could ALSO help folks struggling with their blood sugar.

Researchers at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences recruited 40 volunteers with type 2 diabetes, which were divided into two groups.
The first group swallowed a daily probiotic capsule containing 108 colony forming units (CFU) of L. casei. And group two got a look-alike sugar pill.
After eight weeks, the researchers took a fresh set of blood samples. And within just two months, the probiotic had made a BIG impact.
The L. casei had begun to REVERSE the volunteer’s diabetes symptoms.
The probiotic takers had significant drops in…
- fasting blood sugar
- insulin concentration
- insulin resistance
Incredibly there were EVEN some signs of their HbA1c, a critical measure of blood sugar over time, starting to go down.
Those benefits alone are enough to make anyone concerned about their blood sugar to consider giving L. casei a try. But they weren’t the only ones.
The probiotic also helped with something else many folks with type 2 diabetes struggle with. And that is controlling their weight.
The volunteers taking the L. casei capsules lost weight, improved their BMI, and reduced their waist size. Without even specifically trying.
Reduce appetite and boost metabolism
How the probiotics likely pulled off this little miracle in such a short time can be a bit complicated. But in a nutshell, here’s how the researchers believe the process works.
The probiotic supplements change the balance of your gut bugs. This affects your appetite, so you end up eating less. And naturally, you shed some weight as a result.
At the same time, through a fermentation process, the probiotics bump up your body’s production of short-chain fatty acids. And this increase in SCFAs has a positive effect on your metabolism too.
The best news of all is that L. casei is a common probiotic. So you don’t have to hunt down some exotic pills to give it a try.
You’ll find L. casei in many yogurts, for example. Look for a plain Greek variety, and add your own fruit if you like, for the best results.
And probiotic products containing the L. casei strain can be found anywhere supplements are sold.
