Chances are that heartburn medication prescription your doc just handed to you isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.
Even worse, it might literally be a prescription for your death.
And unfortunately I’m NOT being dramatic.
Let me explain…
Heartburn drugs linked to C. diff deaths?
Two new studies, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine have tied proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as Nexium, Prevacid, and Prilosec, to the sometimes-deadly bacteria C. diff.
You see, stomach acid normally provides a first defense against the nasty bug. But acid-suppressing drugs could leave the door wide open allowing the C. diff to gain a foothold and turn into a full blown… and possibly deadly… infection.
In fact people taking a once a daily dose of a PPI are at a staggering 74 percent increased risk for acquiring C. diff in the hospital.
If you take them more often your risk skyrockets to twice the risk!
Oh, and did I mention the increased risk of fractures in the spine, wrists, hips and forearms brought on by the malabsorption problems these drugs can cause?
And it gets even worse!
60 to 70% on protein pump inhibitors don’t need them
In the vast majority of cases… 60 to 70 percent..people on protein pump inhibitors (PPIs) don’t even need them. And the risks of being on them far outweigh any potential benefits.
So why are prescriptions for these dangerous, ineffective drugs being handed out like candy?
Cold hard cash. These drugs are BIG business, raking in well over $25 billion a year in sales for Big Pharma.
But like I said, the majority of people… on these dangerous meds don’t need them.
Chances are you don’t either. Consider giving them up and opting for some simple side-effect free lifestyle changes instead.
Don’t quit heartburn drugs cold turkey
Keep in mind that quitting cold turkey without a plan can cause a rebound effect in some people… so plan ahead when stopping them.
Also be sure to check in with your doctor, since some conditions like Barrett’s esophagus may be a legitimate reason to use them int he short term.
The easiest first step is to start taking note of what foods and drinks cause your heartburn to flare up and eliminate them. Many heartburn sufferers swear by fermented sauerkraut juice (found in health food stores) as an effective alternative to drugs.
Adding acidophilus and a digestive enzyme to your routine can also make a huge difference. And, if it doesn’t…it still won’t kill you.
As for me, I’ll be popping the little purple pill…into the garbage pail.
