There’s no better time than right now to bust one of the biggest myths out there about the brain burps and senior moment struggles that often pop up as we get older.
And it’s an assumption built right into that sentence. Since cognitive issues tend to strike when we get older, people think age alone is the main factor. But it’s not.
In many cases, the reason we start to slip as we age doesn’t have a thing to do with the number of years we have under our belt. But instead, it’s the accumulation of TOXINS over that time.
It happens slowly, building up over the years. And when you’re in your 60s or 70s, it can all start to catch up.
Those invisible toxins can contribute to…
- cognitive decline
And now, new animal research has exposed a SPECIFIC hidden toxin that could be behind ALL of those frightening conditions and more.
Keep reading to discover what it is, how to dial back your exposure, slash your risks, and protect your brain.
Study links THESE toxins to brain issues
You’ve no doubt heard of Polychlorinated biphenyls or PCBs before. These manmade chemicals were once widely used in everything from electronics manufacturing to lubricants.
But PCBs were proven to be toxic, affecting the immune, endocrine, and reproductive systems. Animal studies even tied them to cancer. And eventually it was banned in 1979.
Now the new study found that PCBs can ALSO damage essential “helper cells” in the brain. And that’s a BIG problem because these cells are critical for a proper central nervous system function. Plus, they provide vital protection against neurodegenerative issues.
When the helper cells lose function, memory and cognition can suffer. And that can lead to all of those brain-related issues I just mentioned.
How “banned” PCBs can still harm your health
Now, you might be thinking there’s no need to worry about these new findings. After all, PCBs were “banned” over 40 years ago.
But here’s the problem. PCBs don’t break down easily or quickly. Once released into the environment, they stick around for a VERY long time. Plus, they can travel around the world through air and water.
That means that you weren’t JUST exposed to PCBs back in the day when they were being used everywhere. You’re almost certainly STILL being exposed to them despite that long-ago ban.
And your body is like a SPONGE when it comes to this stuff.
One inside, PCBs build up. Exposure to them has been linked to dozens of health problems, including the cancer I mentioned earlier. And as the new study shows, they could be a key contributing factor in the kinds of brain disorders we start to see as we get older.
2 ways to help protect your brain from PCBs
The two biggest sources of PCB exposure these days are seafood and water.
To slash your exposure from seafood, avoid farmed fish – especially farmed salmon. Often the low-quality fish meal used as feed is contaminated with PCBs.
If you’re concerned about PCBs in your water, call or write to your supplier – or check online – for the most recent test results. If you use a well, you’ll have to pay a couple of bucks to send out a sample for testing.
In either case, if PCBs are present in your tap water – especially at or near levels of 500 ppt – don’t drink it, cook with it, wash your food with it, or bathe in it. In fact, don’t even do your laundry or water your garden with it until you do one thing first.
Invest in a granular activated carbon filtration system. And have it installed where the water enters your house to cover all the water sources in your home.
