In an animal study out of China, scientists fed a bunch of lab rats a high fat, high calorie diet. But one group also received onion and garlic oils with their feasts.
The rats which received the oils didn’t pack on the pounds as expected. They gained significantly less weight than their pudgy pals which didn’t get the combo. And just as exciting, the onion and garlic oils appeared to protect their little livers from the high fat food as well.
Plus this isn’t the first time we’ve seen research hinting that onions and garlic could help us with weight loss.
We don’t know exactly how the research will translate to humans yet. But we do know allicin and quercetin, active ingredients in onions and garlic, fight fat accumulation and boost metabolism.
Which means eating more of them could be the key to beating your own belly fat.

The researchers tracked the effects of onion extract on the brain. They found that the natural antioxidant allium, found in onions and garlic, reduced the tell-tale markers of inflammation. And at the same time, it increased the production of protective chemicals in the brain.

This spicy combo is so promising when it comes to fighting cancer that The National Cancer Institute has an entire fact sheet devoted to the topic. Studies have linked onions and garlic to a lower risk of stomach, colon, esophageal, pancreatic, colorectal, prostate and breast cancers.
3. Boost immune system:
Both onions and garlic are swimming in immune-building antioxidants.
Garlic may be able to help you fight off colds and the flu. Studies show the spice can reduce your risk of getting sick. And should you still get sick, garlic might shorten your illness.
