You may recall a shocking study that made big headlines a few years back. You couldn’t turn on the TV or read the news without it popping up.
Researchers claimed taking the omega-3 fatty acids found in supplements could send the risk for deadly, high-grade tumors soaring by up to 71 percent in some men.
It was terrifying news. And countless men tossed their fish oil in the trash the very same day the study was published and never looked back.
But here’s the thing. Just a year later, another study was published. That one found NO LINK at all. But, as you can imagine, not having any built-in shock value, it didn’t get nearly as much coverage.
Now, another new study has put the final nail in this myth’s coffin.
Omega-3 fatty acids deliver BIG benefits
Researchers in Utah have found that blood levels of EPA and DHA – the two primary omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil – make no difference when it comes to prostate cancer.
But a second new study from the same researchers finds omega-3s DO make a big difference somewhere ELSE very important. These essential fatty acids can deliver major benefits for your heart.
When scientists examined angiograms from 900 patients with no history of heart issues, they found that 40 percent were actually quietly suffering from serious problems with blood flow to the heart.
That’s a significant risk factor for serious cardiovascular problems, of course. But not when fish oil entered the picture.
Because even when they had these blood flow problems, folks with the highest blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids had a LOWER risk of…
- heart attack
- heart failure
- stroke
- death
In other words, the fish oil helped the very people who needed it the most. The folks facing the highest risk of the deadliest heart problems got the life-saving benefits.
That’s not the only way fish oil can enhance blood flow, either. A study last summer found omega-3 fatty acids can deliver better circulation within the brain too. In fact, it could help protect against Alzheimer’s disease.
You can get omega-3 fatty acids from cold-water fatty fish such as salmon. But to get them consistently in the levels you need for all of these protections and more, you’ll need to take a daily supplement too.
