“Don’t drink the water!”
It’s a bit of advice you hear a lot when you travel overseas.
And every time you do, it makes you feel grateful to live in the United States. Because here clean, safe tap water is only a faucet away.
Or is it?
It turns out for millions of Americans their so-called “safe” tap water is anything but. In fact, they’re being slowly poisoned with every sip.
And what’s worse is they have NO IDEA.
MILLIONS are drinking contaminated water
Nitrates are natural compounds found in air, soil and water. Low levels of them are found naturally in drinking water. And generally, they’re nothing to worry about.
But when researchers analyzed nearly 39,500 community water supplies across the U.S. there WAS a reason to worry.
The nitrate readings were OFF THE CHARTS.
According to the new study, over 5.5 million people are gulping down water with dangerously high levels of nitrates.
And you could be one of them.
4 causes of sky-high nitrate levels
So how did the nitrates GET in the drinking water?
Well, experts say they can come from a few different sources…
- industrial site runoff
- chemical fertilizers used on crops
- improperly disposed of animal waste
- improperly disposed of human waste
And it’s more than just gross.
Those high nitrate levels could have SERIOUS health consequences… especially for older folks, pregnant women, and children.
Too many nitrates could make you sick
Drinking water that’s swimming in nitrates year after year could make you sick.
In fact, excess nitrates are associated with…
Cancer: Research has linked nitrate-laced drinking water to several different cancers including ovarian, bladder, thyroid and colon. In one study women drinking nitrate filled water had a 2.6 times higher risk of developing thyroid cancer. And in other research, both men and women exposed to nitrates were more likely to develop colon cancer.
Methemoglobinemia: With this blood disorder, your cells end up getting too little oxygen. Usually, hemoglobin carries and releases the oxygen to the tissues which need it most. But methemoglobinemia causes your body to produce too much methemoglobin which is unable to release the oxygen into your cells. In infants, the condition can be deadly.
Age-related macular degeneration: Drinking nitrate-contaminated water could steal your eyesight too. In a study, researchers found folks who were drinking water with medium to high levels of nitrates were more likely to develop age-related macular degeneration.
Thyroid disease: At least four separate studies have linked nitrates with thyroid disease. Some experts believe even so-called “safe” levels could be contributing to the rise we’ve seen in thyroid problems.
Test your drinking water for nitrates
The terrible truth is drinking water is slowly poisoning millions of Americans. And they have no idea it’s even happening.
And you could be a victim every time you turn on the tap too.
You can’t see or smell nitrates in the water. So you can’t assume your own supply is safe. Test it instead.
You’ll find affordable water testing kits online or at your local hardware store.
They’re super easy to use. And the test will reveal the level of nitrates, and other contaminants, in your drinking water within minutes.
