The study puts a golden seal of approval on “getting busy” on a regular basis…
The researchers were studying sex frequency and brain aging in older folks. They found out how often the participants were having sex… and then put them through a series of cognitive tests.
And what they discovered was stunning.
The folks who had a roll in the hay less than once a week didn’t do any better on those tests than those who weren’t getting any action at all.
But the volunteers who were getting it on at least once a week had SIGNIFICANTLY higher scores in two brain aging areas DIRECTLY linked with dementia.
How sex supercharges your brain power
First, they kicked butt in verbal fluency…
This is how easily you can come up with a word. You know that tip-of-the-tongue feeling when you just can’t recall a word or name when you need it? Well, that’s not necessarily memory. That very well could be verbal fluency.
And losing verbal fluency is one of the first big warning signs of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. So it’s no small thing.
Second, the folks who had frequent sex scored higher on visuospatial skills.
What’s that? Put simply, visuospatial skills are things like depth perception. For example when you end up taking a bad fall because you misjudged a step on the stairs. Also, recognizing faces and judging distance when you’re doing something like driving (and you end up hitting a parked car because you didn’t realize how close you were).
Loss of this skill is ALSO a prime red flag for dementia.
Can SEX make you smarter as you age?
Plus who doesn’t want to be whip-fast when coming up with words and names? Or able to easily recognize people and hold on to their ability to drive and maintain their precious independence?
Other studies have shown that sexually active seniors score higher on all cognitive tasks. But this was the first one to reveal super-specific details on how MUCH sex you should aim for. And in what WAYS those rolls in the hay can help you stay sharp.
