Lung cancer is as bad as it gets. It’s the deadliest form of the disease, killing more than 10,000 Americans every month.
One of the main reasons this cancer is so deadly is that treatment options are very limited. But new research may have just provided us with a brand-new powerful solution.
Scientists have discovered what could turn out to be one of the most promising new therapies against lung cancer yet.
It’s not another drug with devastating toxic side effects that sap you of strength and energy. And it’s not another slash-and-burn surgery that’ll leave you weak and wrecked, either.
Instead, it’s an all-natural therapy that may be able to attack the tumor directly without ruining your life.
A new approach to lung cancer
Until recently, lung cancer was considered a “smoker’s disease.” It was assumed you could avoid it by simply not smoking.
But the disease has been increasingly turning up in nonsmokers now too. In fact, up to one in five lung cancer tumors are being diagnosed in people who’ve never touched a cigarette in their lives.
In other words, we’re ALL at risk now. And we should be prepared for a battle with this killer.
But new research reveals a natural therapy that could help block the disease in its earliest stages, so it never turns into a tumor. And it may even help treat and beat the cancer if it strikes.
It’s a compound I’ve talked about before here in Healthier Talk called berberine.
Usually, I’m singing berberine’s praises because of its blood-sugar battling benefits. But now, new lab tests show that the same plant extract was able to block the proliferation of lung cancer cells.
It was also shown to fight off the type of damage caused by the toxins in cigarette smoke. Berberine has the potential to help protect the airways as well as healthy cells that have been exposed to those creepy chemicals.
The extract was especially protective against the reactive oxygen species at the heart of the damage caused by many cancers, including lung cancer.
Now to be clear, this was a lab study and not a real-world test. In other words, it’s just the first step in finding out just how powerful a tool berberine can be in the fight against lung cancer.
But the results are already incredibly encouraging. And if you’ve smoked… or are at risk for lung cancer… it might be time to ask your doctor about trying berberine. Berberine supplements are affordable and widely available.
How berberine may help
I’ll be honest. I wouldn’t usually get too excited over a lab study. But this time, it’s a bit different.
We already know much about berberine and how it may work for several other conditions. And some of those well-established benefits are likely why it may work against this form of cancer.
First is the compound’s ability to fight inflammation. In the new study, berberine targeted the kind of inflammation that could help lung cancer form in the first place and then grow and spread.
And second, as I mentioned earlier, berberine is also known to help control blood sugar. Many cancers, including lung cancer, use sugar as their primary source of fuel to grow and spread.
So when you slash the amount of sugar circulating in your bloodstream, you’re cutting off the tumor’s ability to thrive at the same time.
