Nothing helps transform a bland dish into a memorable meal faster than a shake or two of salt. Personally, I’m partial to the pink Himalayan variety.
But these days, people are practically terrified of using the stuff. Sadly, salt has been the victim of one of the most vicious smear campaigns of any food in all human history.
Like any good lie, there IS a dash of truth to this one. You see, the massive amounts of junk sodium dumped into processed and ultra-processed foods are no good for anyone.
But other than that, salt isn’t just safe. It’s ESSENTIAL. And if you aren’t salt sensitive, which could raise your blood pressure, there’s no need to swear off this taste-enhancing gift.
In fact, if you cut out the salt entirely, you could lose a key line of defense against a deadly disease.
How LOW SALT could harm your health
Researchers uncovered a “shocking” truth in a recent study. Despite being constantly vilified, salt has the potential to help us fight off cancer and wipe out tumor cells.
In other words, a so-called “bad” salt habit could help prevent a tumor from forming. And if you’re already battling cancer, sodium could help stop it from growing.
But wait, I’m not done shocking you yet. The problem is many folks… especially seniors… aren’t getting ENOUGH salt.
Instead, they’re following mainstream advice and actively avoiding it. And these super-low sodium diets could end up backfiring on them.
Salt is an ESSENTIAL mineral
Trust me, I get it. You only ever hear about the so-called “dangers” of salt. So I wouldn’t be at all surprised if you were petrified to use any.
With salt being cast as the black-hat villain all the time, it’s easy to forget it really isn’t our enemy. In fact, it’s an essential mineral.
Your body needs salt to keep fluids in balance. Plus, sodium helps ensure healthy nerve and muscle function.
Now, recent research has revealed another critical benefit. It turns out sodium could also help arm you against some of the deadliest cancers known to man, including lung cancer.
And believe it or not, it all starts by DISARMING your immune system.
Uncloak cancer cells using sodium
I know that might sound like crazy talk at first. After all, dialing BACK your immune system when you may be facing a deadly disease is counterintuitive.
But here’s the thing. Your immune system is a fine-tuned machine with powerful built-in checks on itself to stop it from attacking your own body.
And cancers are sneaky little suckers. They essentially hitch a ride on your built-in immunity suppressors, using them to hide.
Here’s where salt enters the scene. In an animal cell study, when researchers introduced some extra sodium, it suppressed the suppressors.
In other words, the cancers were uncloaked. The critter’s immune systems were able to spot the cancer cells, and they headed in for the attack.
And it worked in at least two different cancer models… melanoma and lung cancer. In less than two weeks, the salt-supported immune system flipped the script. It targeted the cancer cells, significantly slowing the growth of the tumors.
Don’t be afraid of the shake
Now let’s be clear, this was an animal study. No people were involved. So more research needs to be done to see if sodium can help target tumors in people too.
And we certainly shouldn’t start eating barrels full of salt. Overdoing it could have consequences for anyone.
But this promising research has provided us with even more proof that salt isn’t the bogeyman mainstream medicine wants us to believe. Salt not only enhances the flavors in your food, but it’s also essential for your health.
In fact, other research has highlighted the potential pitfalls of a very low-salt diet. It could increase your risk of everything from bone breaks to death. And, of course, seniors are the most likely to suffer.
Unless you’re salt-sensitive (a naturopathic doctor can help diagnose you), you typically DON’T have to stress over using a dash of delicious Himalayan or sea salt on your meals. And you certainly don’t need to fear the sodium found naturally in fresh foods, either.
Just avoid eating processed and prepackaged foods. They can contain buckets of junk sodium along with a boatload of other unwanted additives.
And if you’ve ALREADY overdone the junk salt, you can help undo some of the damage with this delicious solution (trust me, you’re going to LOVE this “prescription”).
