You only WISH you could laugh again.
But let’s face it when you’re battling depression… especially the stubborn form that won’t go away even after multiple attempts to treat it… laughing is the LAST thing in the world you expect to do.
So it’s more than a little ironic that the latest potential depression treatment IS, in fact, laughing gas.
You read that right. The same stuff dentists used to use (and still do, especially on kids) shows promise as a potential cure for tough-to-treat forms of depression.
But don’t stock up on nitro cartridges just yet. And definitely don’t get ready to inhale.
Because as you’ll see in a moment, this might NOT be the harmless option for depression the popular press is making it out to be. But keep reading, and I have some safer and effective options you can try instead.
Laughing gas better than meds?
First, the good news. Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, does appear to work well when combined with traditional antidepressant drugs.
In the new study, the gas and drug combo led to improvements in 85 percent of patients who had an hour-long gas session once a month for three months. And 40 percent went into full remission.
Even relatively low levels of gas – less than what dentists use – can do the trick.
Not really a complete surprise considering it’s called LAUGHING gas, not CRYING gas. So it represents the polar opposite of depression.
But despite the merry nickname, nitrous oxide has a few side effects that are no laughing matter. In fact, in the new study, about one in six patients quit after one session, which is a sure sign that side effects ARE an issue.
Nitrous oxide can cause dizziness, which may not be a big deal to younger patients but could cause falls and injuries in seniors (especially if you’re already unsteady from other medications).
Using the gas frequently can interfere with white blood cells, setting the stage for infection and immune problems. Plus, overuse can lead to a form of anemia caused by low vitamin B12.
And while laughing gas isn’t addictive in the traditional sense, people can become emotionally dependent on it. That can lead to abuse, and, believe it or not, in some extreme cases, people have died from overuse.
Ditch the depression naturally
But if you have treatment-resistant depression, it might be tempting to give nitrous oxide a try anyway. I get that. After all, when nothing works, you can end up feeling desperation on top of the depression.
But you don’t have to suck up laughing gas for relief. And you certainly don’t have to suffer through failed drug after failed drug.
You have another option… several even.
To start with, the reason your depression is “resisting” treatment could be that it’s NOT depression at all, but a symptom of something else entirely. It could be a sign of metal toxicity (especially mercury), a nutritional deficiency (often B vitamins), or even a hormonal issue.

Most mainstream docs won’t acknowledge those potential causes of depression. But a naturopathic or integrative medicine doctor can run some tests, help you figure out what’s wrong, and then get you back on track without more meds.
Plus, in many cases, natural therapies can work nearly as well for some folks as common antidepressant drugs but without the same side effects.
For example, Curcumin (1000 mg) was found to be just about as effective as the depression drug fluoxetine in a study. Other proven non-drug options for easing depression include 5htp and SAMe.
Talk with your doc about giving some natural alternatives a try, and you could soon even find yourself laughing again – no gas needed.
