Perhaps you’re someone who enjoys a glass of wine with dinner from time to time, or a beer during the game. Or maybe you’re mostly a teetotaler.
Either way, if you’re like many folks, you’ll choose to indulge in a couple of cocktails or glasses of champagne today. After all, it’s New Year’s Eve.
But if you do let your hair down a bit TONIGHT, you certainly don’t want to be paying for it with a sickening hangover all day TOMORROW.
And you don’t have to. Because the best hangover cures, are the kind that prevents you from getting one in the first place.
Keep reading to discover how to AVOID that next day hangover before you ever take your first sip.
And should you end up overindulging after all, don’t panic. I have some helpful hangover cures to get you feeling better fast, too.
The best defense is a good offense “hangover cures”
Obviously, the easiest way to avoid a hangover is to skip the drink in the first place. But when a celebration calls for a toast or two, you should feel free to indulge if you want to. And you can.
Simply apply these four easy to remember tips, and you should sail through tomorrow hangover free.
1. Win with water:
Alcohol is dehydrating, and your level of dehydration is directly responsible for how severe your hangover is the next day. Which is why staying hydrated is critical.
But it’s easy to forget to drink enough water when you’re at a party. So give yourself a simple rule to follow. For every alcoholic beverage you have, drink a full glass (or even better, two) of water.
Stick to it, and you’ll avoid the next day hangover altogether. Simple, right?
2. Eat first:
Staying hydrated tops our hangover cures list for a reason. It’s the single most important thing you can do to avoiding feeling sick tomorrow.
But building a base with some food before you indulge comes in a close second.
Be sure you eat before you start celebrating. Tonight is not the night to skip a meal. Drinking on an empty stomach causes your body to absorb alcohol faster. While food will slow down the absorption rate of whatever alcohol you’re tossing back.
Include some high-protein foods and whole grains in your meal too. Both will help slow down alcohol absorption even further.
3. Skip the diet:
If you’re aiming to help balance out your indulgences tonight by using diet soda in your drinks, don’t. Research conducted at Northern Kentucky University found that diet soda mixers make people drunker than sugary ones.
In the study, volunteers who mixed their alcohol with regular soda or fruit juice had a breath alcohol concentration of .077. But folks who mixed the same amount of alcohol with diet sodas had a measured a .091.
In other words, the diet drink drove UP the alcohol’s impact by a startling 18 percent. And that could have you heading for a hangover fast.
4. Be booze smart:
All alcohol contains chemicals called congeners, byproducts of the fermentation process. But some varieties include more than others do, and that’s key when you’re talking about hangover cures.
Two separate studies—one published in the Journal of the National Medical Association and the other in the journal Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research—found that drinks with lots of congeners lead to worse hangovers.
To avoid too many congeners skip the darker booze. Liquors such as bourbon and scotch are heavy in the chemicals, while clear liquors such as rum, gin, and vodka have fewer.
Hangover cures for the day after
If you still wake up tomorrow morning feeling a little like something the cat dragged in, well you know what they say about the best intentions.
But don’t worry; I can help with that hangover too. Following are three tried-and-true hangover cures to help you feel better fast…
1. Water and food:
Trust me. Dehydration is making you feel MUCH worse than you would otherwise. So it’s important to sip as much water as you comfortably can. The more you get down, the sooner that killer headache will fade away
Also, according to research conducted at Brown University in Rhode Island, there’s a good chance low blood sugar is making things worse too.
Experts haven’t been able to identify any universal hangover-friendly foods yet. But if you’re like most folks, you already have an idea of what works best for YOU when your stomach feels queasy.
And that’s the key; eat whatever sounds good to YOU. Because no matter what you eat, it will raise your blood sugar which will ease your symptoms.
2. Sleep it off:
If you can take the day off and rest, do. Your body heals itself more quickly when you’re asleep. And being overtired will make your hangover symptoms feel FAR more severe, too.
If it’s not possible to take the whole day off do your best to grab 40 winks in the afternoon to recharge your batteries. And turn in early for the night too.
3. Stock up on supplements:
Time to head to the drugstore. Only instead of grabbing pain killers, shoot for the supplement aisle. (Pro tip: Go pick up you supplements TONIGHT so don’t have to trudge to the store tomorrow when you’re feeling sick.)
In a study out of Germany, researchers found that a combination of prickly pear and borage oil helped reduce even the worst hangover symptoms by 88 percent. Pick up some Siberian ginseng while you’re at it, too. Not only does this herb dial down overall hangover discomfort, it can also flat-out cure some symptoms.
Whatever your plans are tonight, have fun and be safe. And if you decide to have a drink or two, these hangover cures can help you ring in the New Year hangover free.
