Boy, heartburn drugs have really changed over the years.
Sure, you can still grab a Rolaids or Tums at any old convenience store. But these days, people have a whole NEW way to spell relief.
It’s P-P-I, which is an abbreviation for potent acid-suppressing proton pump inhibitors. These heavy-duty drugs are now taken by prescription by 15 million Americans and over-the-counter by millions more.
But new research exposes the horrifying truth about these heartburn drugs.
And if you’re taking them yourself for heartburn or acid reflux, it could spell something other than relief. It could spell…
D-E-A-T-H!
Yes, my friend, it turns out these drugs can pack the worst possible side effect imaginable.
The deadly risks of reflux drugs
The problem with the old meds, for many people, is that you have to feel sick first and THEN you take them and suffer while you wait for relief.
PPIs, on the other hand, are taken every day, whether you have an acid attack or not. They’re supposed to prevent heartburn or at least minimize it, so you never have to feel the burn in the first place.
That’s great… in theory.
In reality, taking ANY drug daily for a long time can mess up your body in ways that are never seen in early studies since most don’t last long enough to detect the TRUE risks.
And that’s where the new study comes in. It reveals why taking these nasty heartburn pills could be the BIGGEST mistake of your life.
When compared to the older H2 blocker drugs, long-term use of PPIs bump the risk of death up by 17 percent. And that’s even at the “low” doses of the over-the-counter formulations.
Now, short of going in your sleep at the age of 109 while in otherwise perfect health, there’s no “good” way to die.
But the people who take these heartburn meds aren’t dying in their sleep (and certainly not at anything close to 109).
They’re dying in some of the worst ways possible, including…
- cardiovascular disease
- chronic kidney disease
- upper gastrointestinal cancer
In real numbers, the study finds 45 excess deaths from these causes over 10 years for every 1,000 patients on the meds.
Given the millions who take PPIs for heartburn, the researchers behind the study say that adds up to THOUSANDS OF DEATHS every year LINKED to these meds.
REAL heartburn relief without risk
That’s stunning in light of a report I shared last week. It found three out of four patients on the drugs don’t actually need them in the first place.
Why risk that when you’ve got better options?
Try baking soda first. Mix a teaspoon into some cool water, wait until it clears, then knock it back for quick heartburn relief that won’t kill you.
Other home remedies that offer REAL relief without risk include…
- chamomile tea
- ginger tea
- fennel seed tea
- raw potato juice
Sip a glass of whichever one you prefer after meals, or at the first sign of heartburn.
If you have painful and persistent acid issues, consider getting tested for the undiagnosed food allergies and sensitivities that could be behind your problems. And talk to an integrative medicine doctor about the possibility of LOW stomach acid being the hidden cause behind your heartburn.
