Battling headaches? Welcome to the club NO ONE wants to be a member of.
I’ve had my own on-and-off (and on again) battle with headaches myself for most of my adult life. I’ll share what works for me in a moment.
If you don’t need this head-pain-dodging trick now, you might soon. Because new research finds headaches are turning into a leading form of chronic pain.
It’s not just migraines anymore, either. Every type is surging from run-of-the-mill headbangers to chronic cluster headaches and migraines.
And both men and women alike are paying the price.
The sudden surge in headaches
According to researchers, the number of folks suffering from headaches these days is staggering: Fifty percent.
In other words, half the planet’s population is now routinely battling head pain. One in four are fighting through “tension” headaches, and one in seven suffers from recurring migraines.
On any given day, 16 percent of the population has some form of headache. Nearly half of them are migraines which are more common in women. But almost 10 percent of men now have migraines, too.
And here’s the most shocking number of all. One in 20 people has headaches at least 15 days every month.
That isn’t JUST half a month spent living in agony or muddling along in a painkiller haze. It’s also the loss of precious time that could be spent with the people you care about, doing the things you love.
But you may not have to turn to those drugs yourself if you’re dealing with regular headaches. Because there are other proven ways to beat the pain.
Beat all types of head pain
As I mentioned earlier, I’m prone to headaches myself. Specifically, I struggle with migraines, and they often come with that blinding “aura” that makes it tough to function.
I’ve found magnesium can help reduce the number of attacks I have to deal with. And this simple mineral can also make the ones I still have less intense when they strike.
That’s backed by research, too. And since we ALL need magnesium anyway, a supplement’s a no-brainer. Studies have also found that butterbur can work as effectively as meds in stopping migraines in some cases.
But there’s another helpful step to take regardless of the type of headaches you get, from migraines to clusters. And that’s to learn to spot and avoid the triggers.
Alcohol is a common one. So are certain food additives such as MSG and aspartame. A “headache diary” can help you spot what you’re eating (and doing) on the days your head starts to ache. And that can help you spot what’s causing the headaches to avoid those triggers in the future.
