If you’re a woman or love someone who is, you aren’t going to want to miss the latest breakthrough in the fight against breast cancer. Scientists have announced a common beverage you can order just about anywhere may have the power to stop breast cancer cells in their tracks.
According to British researchers, green tea could be a more powerful weapon against breast cancer than we ever imagined.
Here’s how it works…
Every cell in your body, the ones you want and the ones you don’t, have to metabolize or refuel to continue to grow. But it turns out compounds in green tea can target breast cancer cells preventing them from refueling.
This stops them from growing, and they eventually shrivel up and die.
6 MORE green tea health benefits
Scientists are planning more research to figure out how we can best harness this newly uncovered power. But there’s no reason to wait around for those results to start reaping the rewards of green tea. This mild and delicious beverage already has a huge healing resume.
You see, fighting breast cancer is just the tip of the iceberg. Experts say there are a bunch of other green tea health benefits.
1. Alzheimer’s disease:
Research has revealed green tea may also help us reduce our risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Separate studies out of the UK and Japan confirm components in the healing beverage can help protect the brain.
UK researchers found green tea in some cases could slash the risk of dementia up to an incredible 86 percent. While scientists in Japan determined parts of this powerful herbal beverage are associated with less of the plaque build-up in the brain that contributes to Alzheimer’s disease.
2. Bone strength:
When we’re young, the only time we think about our bones is if we accidentally break one. But all that changes as we age. Because with each passing year our risk for weakening bones rises.
Breaking a hip, wrist or foot for example becomes a real danger, as we get older. So it becomes increasingly important to do things to strengthen our bones. If you aren’t already doing weight-bearing exercises such as walking, dancing, step aerobics or stair climbing, it’s time to start.
But it turns out sipping on green tea might be able to help shore up your bone strength too. A study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that the drink could help prevent weak, brittle bones.
EGC, a chemical in green tea, strengthened bones in three ways.
- First, it activated an enzyme essential to bone growth, increasing its power by 79 percent.
- Second, it boosted bone mineralization.
- Finally, it slowed down the cells which absorb bone.
The result is denser, more break-resistant bones.
3. Cancer:
Green tea doesn’t just target breast cancer alone. According to the National Cancer Institute green te health benefits extend to other cancers too. It can also kill bladder, ovarian, colorectal, prostate, and lung cancer cells. Depending on the diagnosis, experts say sipping on two to 10 cups a day may be helpful.
If you have cancer check with your doctor to find out how you can incorporate green tea into your own treatment plan.
4. Heart disease:
Drinking more green tea could also help protect your heart. While antioxidants are great for overall health, scientists say specific ones in green tea called flavan-3-ols are particularly good at protecting heart health.
Plus research has revealed green tea also contains numerous compounds which appear to slash the risk of heart disease by helping to reduce high blood pressure and unhealthy cholesterol levels.
5. Stroke risk:
You already know a regular green tea habit can be good for your heart health. So it’s probably not surprising to learn green tea health benefits extend to lowering your risk for stroke too.
A huge meta-analysis conducted by Chinese researchers which crunched the data from over half a million people confirms it. According to the research team, three cups of green tea per day could significantly lower your risk of stroke. And that risk drops even further with every additional three cups.
6. Eyesight:
If you want eagle eyes, try drinking more drink green tea. It’s an excellent source of nutrients known to protect your eyes, like lutein and zeaxanthin. Plus the antioxidants found in the tea can help protect against eye diseases as well.
In fact, research out of Hong Kong found that green tea’s protective compounds travel directly to the eyes where they’re absorbed and stored. This process can protect the eye for up to 20 hours.
So what are you waiting for? The sooner you make this delicious beverage a part of your regular routine the sooner you can start reaping the many green tea health benefits.
