It’s been called the “fountain of youth,” an antioxidant so powerful it can fight the aging process and ward off chronic disease, including some of today’s leading killers.
So naturally, the mainstream has dismissed resveratrol as a myth — a substance that can’t possibly deliver on all those promises.
Well, let’s see them try to dismiss it now, as the latest research shows just how it works inside your body, activating the stress response and allowing you to fight off damage on a cellular level.
Specifically, resveratrol activates gene p53, which fights cancer, as well as the genes FOXO3A and SIRT6, according to the study. Those last two might look like a jumble of letters and numbers, but they’ve both been linked to longevity.
Yes, in other words the study finds that resveratrol just might be the “fountain of youth” after all.
Resveratrol could help with glucose control too
SIRT6 can also help with glucose control, especially in diabetics. And the same study finds that resveratrol also activates AMPK, which helps your cells to survive in the face of stress.
This was a study on mice, not people, but it does confirm many of the benefits of resveratrol we’ve seen in other studies. It also shows why the mainstream might be so eager to dismiss it as a myth: It’s a massive threat to the drug industry.
Having said all that, there is one big myth about resveratrol. It has nothing to do with all the potential benefits, and everything to do with how you get it.
The media likes to call resveratrol the “red wine antioxidant” as if you can knock back a glass or two of booze to get what you need. Since one of the best natural sources of resveratrol is grape skins, a little does end up in the wine.
Skip the red wine and reach for a supplement instead
But that’s all it is: a little.
The new study finds these small amounts might actually help activate that stress-fighting process. But you’d die of alcohol poisoning before getting close to the amounts used in many other studies, which is why the best way to get this stuff isn’t from wine but from a supplement.
I recommend starting with 100 mg per day, ideally as part of an antioxidant blend.
