We could all use a little extra spark in the bedroom from time to time. The day to day stuff has a way of getting in the way sometimes. And as we get older, our priorities can change.
But if your sex life has been on vacation so long you’re beginning to worry it might be time to take a look at your diet. Because if your sex life is more of a yawn than a yippee recently, it may not be age at all.
It turns out it may be your menu that’s to blame.
Sex life killers in your kitchen
Following are six common foods which could be secretly destroying your sex life.
1. Soy:
Even if you’re not a vegetarian, soy has a way of sneaking into your diet these days. Food manufacturers hide it in some of the most unexpected places including salad dressings, breads, sausages, hamburgers, soups, chips and breakfast bars.
And guys, all that soy can pose a problem for your sex life. Two independent studies out of the University Hospital of Wales and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey both found that soy could reduce testosterone levels in men. And with your testosterone levels already dropping with age, you need to hold on to every bit of the manly hormone you can.
Cutting back on the soy could help heat things back up in the bedroom. Check food labels carefully for soy, soybean, textured vegetable protein, lecithin, tofu and soy oil.
2. Conventional dairy:
If your milk, cheese and yogurt isn’t organic, experts say it may be messing with your love life. Conventional factory farms shoot their dairy cattle full of hormones to increase their milk production. Traces of those hormones could end up in you. And that may mess with your own hormone levels.
Look for dairy products marked organic to be sure they’re hormone-free.
3. Alcohol:
A single cocktail or glass of wine can have some benefits. And as you may be able to confirm, that can include getting you in the mood.
But if you’re indulging in more than that one drink a night, you could be setting yourself—and your sex life—back.
A meta-analysis found that drinking too much alcohol consistently caused men to have less interest in sex. And problems with performance when they were in the mood.
And it’s not just the guys who need to avoid overdoing alcohol. Ladies, too many hard drinks can cause painful sex and dryness in women.
4. Canned foods:
They’re quick, they’re convenient and they could be killing your libido. Many canned goods are loaded with junk sodium. If you’re salt sensitive, that means they can send your blood pressure climbing while decreasing blood flow. And that’s a double whammy to a healthy sex life.
But the bad news doesn’t end there. The cans themselves are often lined with a chemical called bisphenol-A or BPA.
BPA is a known hormone disruptor. Which means it can put a hitch in your hormone levels and your love life. So, even if you’re choosing low sodium canned goods, you could still be feeling the impact of eating too many canned foods in your bedroom.
Leave the canned stuff on the shelf. Stick to fresh or frozen vegetables instead.
5. Popcorn:
Wait… don’t dump your popcorn in the trash just yet. If you’re making your favorite movie snack the old fashioned way with kernels on the stove, or in an air popper, you’re in the clear.
Popcorn can be a perfectly healthy snack. In fact, it even has some health benefits. But throw a bag in the microwave, and there’s a problem. Because the chemicals lining the bags are bad news.
Perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA, is a man-made compound that’s used to create non-stick surfaces. And it works well. The problem is it’s also a hormone disruptor. Which means it can mess with your endocrine system as well as your performance in the sack.
6. Sodas:
No matter whether you grab a full sugar soda or a diet version, you’re not doing your love life any favors.
The artificial sweeteners in diet sodas interact with your brain chemicals, including serotonin and dopamine, which can lead to feelings of depression, sadness or simply disinterest in sex. But the sugar in regular sodas is also a libido killer. It can send your testosterone levels plummeting, as well as harming your overall health so you just don’t feel like a roll in the hay.
If things have cooled down in the bedroom lately, don’t despair. Remove these six sex life destroyers from your menu, and things may soon start sizzling again.
