If you gave up your favorite dairy foods so long ago that Reagan was still in the White House, you’re not alone. Lots of us did.
After all, the message from the medical community was clear. Indulge in foods like cheese and yogurt, and you’ll end up fat and with heart problems.
But if you’re a regular Healthier Talk reader, you’ve been hearing ANOTHER message for years now. And that is dairy foods aren’t just okay to eat, they provide health BENEFITS too.
And now yet another study has confirmed it’s time to add dairy foods to your shopping list again.
In this case, it’s fermented dairy products… such as that delicious cheese and Greek yogurt you LOVE… that heart docs have had to admit should be put back on the menu.
Low-fat fermented dairy slashed heart risk 26%
For the long-term study, researchers tracked nearly 2000 men for almost 20 years. And they found that the folks who regularly indulged in low-fat fermented dairy products had a 26 percent lower risk of heart disease than volunteers who ate the least dairy.
And even the guys who ate high-fat fermented dairy products didn’t have an increase in heart problems. (Sound familiar?)
The only group that suffered from eating dairy were those folks who eat a TON of non-fermented dairy products. Which, let’s face it, is likely more about overeating than the foods.
Besides, I think we all know we can’t eat gallons of ice cream … or gulp down four glasses of milk a day… and expect there not to be any consequences. No matter HOW much we wish it were true.
Dairy products could help save your life
And of course, this is far from the only pro-dairy research we’ve seen in the past few years. IA huge meta-analysis completed just last year confirmed dairy products could be GOOD for your health.
In fact, after doing some serious number crunching the researcher’s conclusions stacked up like this….
- 2 percent lower rate of overall death when you eat any dairy
- 8 percent lower rate of overall death when you eat cheese
- 4 percent lower rate of cerebrovascular death when you eat any dairy
- 7 percent lower rate of cerebrovascular death when you drink milk
And of course, now, after this latest research, even heart docs have to admit fermented dairy products are fine too.
Finding the right fermented dairy product for YOU
So what are those, anyway? Well in the case of the Finnish guys in the study, the most popular fermented dairy product was one we don’t even drink here in the States… sour milk.
Don’t worry; it’s not as gross as it sounds. In fact, it’s a lot like what we call buttermilk here.
But if you’re not a buttermilk fan or all that crazy about kefir, you have other options. And ones you’re practically GUARANTEED to love.
- sour cream
- Greek yogurt (pick plain to cut back on sugar and add fruit)
- cheese (such as cheddar, feta, and blue)
