Magnesium is finally being given the long-overdue recognition it deserves. Getting the right amount of this essential mineral is a simple and inexpensive way to support and improve health.
So naturally, the FDA is trying to ruin it.
The agency just stomped all over efforts to raise awareness of this vitally important mineral. And they did it in the most underhanded way possible. They APPROVED it.
Well, sort of. The feds approved a health claim for magnesium.
Essentially, the agency finally allows magnesium supplements and products containing the mineral to include a note about the potential benefits. Sounds good, right?
Well, wait until you see how they managed to ruin the good news.
Telling the TRUTH about magnesium
This shouldn’t be difficult or controversial in the least.
After all, we KNOW magnesium…
- handles some 300 functions in the body
- is critical to everything from bone health to blood pressure
- is low in up to 80 percent of seniors
And we also know a magnesium supplement is one of the fastest, easiest ways to ensure that everyone gets what they need each day to cut all those risks.
So it’s a no-brainer, right?
Well, if that’s the case, I guess it’s safe to say that there are no brains at the FDA. Because the language they approved for magnesium actually makes it sound like some weird back alley remedy instead of an essential mineral we all need to function.
You see, when the feds approve a health claim, they provide suggested language. That way, the folks who make and sell products with the nutrient in them know what they can say without getting into trouble.
In this case, check out the sample language now allowed on magnesium products as a result of the FDA decision:
“Inconsistent and inconclusive scientific evidence suggests that diets with adequate magnesium may reduce the risk of high blood pressure (hypertension), a condition associated with many factors.”
No, I’m not kidding. That is what it ACTUALLY says.
The FDA did “generously” offer several examples of what language can be used to describe magnesium’s benefits. The only trouble is they’re all similar to that outrageous gobbledygook you just read.
In fact, not a single one even bothers to mention supplements. And all of them use some version of that “inconsistent and inconclusive” phrase to essentially make them useless and trash magnesium.
Why you need more of this essential mineral
I can’t imagine anyone reading those phrases and thinking they even need the mineral. Or that running low on magnesium could threaten their health in any way. If anything, they might walk away convinced magnesium isn’t nearly as important as they thought.
It’s clear the feds won’t give you the straight scoop on this essential mineral. So I will. The correct levels of magnesium can help with:
- blood pressure with adequate levels balancing out your electrolytes
- bone protection, especially combined with calcium and vitamins D and K2
- mood as low levels can raise depression risk (22 percent in one study)
- muscle helping to prevent cramps, spams, and other problems
- blood vessels reducing coronary artery calcification 58 percent in the Framingham Heart Study
And that’s just the beginning. Because, as I mentioned earlier, magnesium has more than 300 functions to perform in the body.
So the real question typically isn’t whether you need it. It’s how much more you need to bring your levels back up to where they should be.
For most folks who aren’t laser-focused on raising the magnesium in their diet, that means taking a supplement. Your doctor can help you figure out if that’s the case with you.
But if you do need a supplement, don’t make the common mistake of choosing magnesium oxide. Although this form is used in many supplements, it isn’t absorbed very well. Look for magnesium glycinate or magnesium taurate instead.
