Nitrates fight fatty liver disease
The researchers fed mice a typical Western diet filled with far too many junk fats and simple sugars. And as expected, their weight ballooned.
Plus they built up the mice equivalent of belly fat. Which may be cute on a chubby little mouse, but not so much on us.
ALL of the mice should have been well on their way to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, too. But they weren’t. Because one group of the rodents which received a little extra something in their chow dodged that bullet.
The little guys who had their diet supplemented with inorganic nitrate—a nutrient found naturally in many leafy green veggies—had FAR less fat buildup in their livers.
Nitrates bring MORE benefits to the table
Sure, you’re no lab mouse. But the researchers say the chances are excellent it could work for us too.
In fact, they confirmed their results in not one, but two, different cell culture studies in HUMAN liver cells.
But the nitrate benefits didn’t end with protection against nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
The mice which received the supplement ALSO had a healthy drop in their blood pressures. And those with type 2 diabetes had improvements in blood sugar, as well.
Earlier studies found that dietary nitrates could bump up fuel production in your cells. Which means they can help give you the energy you need to power through your day.
Reduce risk for heart disease, diabetes, & NAFLD
And we even have an idea of how it works.
Free radicals are simple molecules with an electron missing. They bounce around our bodies searching for an electron to steal. When they find one and swipe it, they leave damage in their wake.
In small quantities, this process isn’t a problem. But when there are far more free radicals then antioxidants it leads to what scientists call oxidative stress.
The researchers believe oxidative stress makes it more difficult for nitric oxide to do its job efficiently. And it’s the common thread between heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
