For most of us, it’s hard to pinpoint precisely when it happens. But at some point, it can start to feel like you should just stop making afternoon plans.
But it’s not because you don’t want to do anything, of course. Instead, it’s because afternoon fatigue sets in, and you can’t rely on having enough energy to do them.
Now I get it. Mid or late-day drowsiness might not seem like a big problem at first. But let’s face it when fatigue keeps you from doing the things you love (or need) to do, your quality of life takes a serious hit.
Take napping, for example. A daytime nap can be a refreshing luxury when you choose to take one. But when fatigue forces your eyes closed against your will, it’s an unwanted obligation.
Or when you do manage to stay awake, but you find you can’t focus enough to carry on a conversation or participate in your favorite hobbies, your well-being takes a nosedive.
But the latest research offers what may be the easiest way ever to fight off fatigue. And it doesn’t have a thing to do with sugar, caffeine, or energy drinks.
In other words, you won’t end up stuck in that endless cycle of nervous energy bursts followed by fatigue-filled crashes.
Energy-boosting NMN could fight fatigue
It turns out this fatigue-fighting solution has been hiding in plain sight all along in a simple natural therapy that’s already known for its anti-aging benefits. It’s called nicotinamide mononucleotide or “NMN” for short.
Now bear with me here for a moment. Because this can seem a bit complicated at first. But in the end, it’s really quite simple.
NMN is created from a form of vitamin B3. And we know from prior research that NMN helps raise nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+, levels.
NAD+ is found in every cell in your body, and it’s crucial for cellular energy production. This gives us our first clue that NMN could also be connected to fatigue.
But our levels of NAD+ naturally drop as we age. That leads to falling energy production in our cells and increased oxidative stress, DNA damage, rising inflammation, and even cognitive impairment.
But NMN can help slow down this process by boosting NAD+ levels in the body. And researchers theorized, as a result, it may help fight daytime fatigue as well.
Beat daytime fatigue naturally
The new study put NMN to the test against a placebo at two different times of the day…
- in the morning (between wakeup and noon)
- in the evening (between 6 p.m. and bedtime)
And despite that the second time slot falls after the midday slump, it’s the one that had the most impact on overall fatigue.
The evening dose of NMN helped because it appears to have led to more restful sleep. Which, of course, was followed by more energy the following day. And that included during the afternoon when so many of us crash and burn.
NMN also helped boost energy in another way that’s just as important for folks as they age. The seniors who took the supplement in the evening also had increased lower limb performance.
In other words, you have less fatigue and more afternoon energy to get stuff done. Plus, you have more strength in your legs, so you can actually accomplish all those things on your to-do list.
That alone makes NMN worth considering. But that’s not all it can do.
More reasons to try NMN
As I mentioned earlier, NMN plays a crucial role in cellular energy production. And that’s not just crucial to help you fight off afternoon fatigue.
The same energy is needed for cellular repairs. That’s why in an animal study a few years back, NMN supplements were linked to improvements in:
- liver function
- bone density
- insulin sensitivity
- muscle health
- dry eyes
In other words, NMN is a repair kit that fights back against the damage of aging itself in many ways.
There are NMN supplements available. But with this research being so new most of them are also pretty new to the scene. That means supplements can be fairly pricey.
A far more affordable way to boost NMN (and ultimately NAD+) levels is to increase its sources in your diet. Broccoli, cabbage, cucumbers, avocados, and tomatoes are excellent sources of this powerful energy booster.
Need a little more ammunition to battle that afternoon slump? I shared four more potent fatigue fighters in my earlier report here.
