When you’re at risk for diabetes, you suddenly get a ton of advice dumped on you on how to prevent the disease. And let’s be honest, none of it’s any fun.
Stop eating THOSE, always do THAT, never drink THIS. It feels like all those well-meaning folks are simply reading from an endless laundry list of forbidden things.
Well, my friend, today I’ve got a way to help you duck diabetes that doesn’t take away anything at all.
In fact, with the thumbs up from your doc, you’ll get to indulge in something you’re going to love.
And chances are you’ve already have enjoyed it in the past but have been told you have to avoid it now that you’re at risk for diabetes.
But new research reveals how this single “bad” habit may help prevent diabetes in many cases. And that could make it a powerful (and delicious) weapon for anyone at risk for the disease.
Dinner and a drink help BLOCK diabetes
The nags don’t like to admit it, but booze isn’t a bad habit, to begin with. Well, not as long as your drinking always remains light to moderate, anyway.
Now researchers say if you’re at risk for diabetes, you can still enjoy wine safely. In fact, it could actually help cut your odds of ever developing the disease.
But there’s one small catch that, frankly, isn’t much of a catch at all. You have to be sure to drink your wine WITH your meals.
In the new study drinking wine on its own didn’t appear to offer any significant protection. But one glass a day for women and up to two glasses a day for men with a meal was linked to a healthy 14 percent drop in diabetes risk.
The research team believes it’s because antioxidant-packed wines have some benefits that other beverages don’t. And I’m sure that’s part of the story.
But I’m betting that’s not the whole picture. In fact, my guess why liquor and beer didn’t appear to offer similar protection against diabetes is that people tend to consume them more frequently in unhealthier settings.
For example, having a few beers with a carbohydrate-packed burger and a side of fries. Or downing a couple of mixed drinks at a bar with nothing but fried “bar food” appetizers to eat.
And compare that to a glass of wine with a well-balanced and civilized meal.
Alcohol linked to health benefits
If you don’t drink wine, this new research certainly isn’t a reason to get started, of course. But if you are already a wine fan and can keep your vino habit to a single glass with dinner (or two for the guys who want to indulge), then this study is great news.
It’s a sign you don’t have to quit just because you’re at risk for diabetes. Just be sure to check in with your doctor first to ensure you’re healthy enough for alcohol and that it won’t interfere with any meds you may be taking.
And it’s not just diabetes that alcohol could potentially dial down risk for. Other studies have found that alcohol… including liquor and beer… could offer some protection against heart disease, stroke, dementia, and more.
Research has even found that folks that indulge in alcohol even tend to live longer, too. And if you ask me, that’s worth toasting.
