“Settle down and act your age,” they say. “You’re a senior, behave like it,” they insist.
No way, not you. In fact, you have NO intention of pulling up an easy chair and giving in to old age. You’ve got big plans, and you intend to see them through.
Maybe you’re out to see the country or even the world. Perhaps you’re finally going to learn a second language or take up that new hobby you always wanted to try like photography. Or it could be that you’re ready to dive in and help raise those adorable grandkids of yours.
But whatever your plans, nothing can quite take the steam out of your engine like a battle with the blues. Because depression can transform you from the vibrant person you are, into someone who looks, feels, and acts decades older.
Depression will rob you of your energy. It will steal your motivation. And it can leave you feeling like a pale and washed-out version of yourself. And when the depression truly settles in, not even the sight of those little ones can lift you up like it used to.
But wait, you don’t have to let yourself slip into that state without putting up a fight. NOT this time. Because I’ve got a simple trick that could help keep the blues at bay.
And, odds are it’s something you have in your cupboard right now.
SLASH your risk of depression with THIS drink
American’s don’t like to talk about depression. We want to keep a stiff upper lip at all times. Heck, many of us flat-out refuse to discuss depression. And that’s a problem.
There’s no shame in admitting when you’re feeling down and seeking some help. And, trust me, you’re in good company. In fact, some seven million American seniors experience some form of depression EVERY YEAR.
But today, I may be able to help you cut WAY back on those bouts of the blues. Because new research reveals a secret solution for fighting off depression before it even starts.
Are you ready for this? Believe it or not, all you have to do is drink more TEA.
It turns out seniors who drink tea can get significant protection against depression. This tasty habit could help any of us in our senior years battle off the blues with the biggest benefits going to guys between the ages of 65 and 79.
Chase away the blues one sip at a time
Now, long time Healthier Talk readers may recall that I’ve recommended tea for mood-boosting before. So I have a theory about why this works so well.
Tea is a great way to boost your L-theanine levels. This amino acid can cross your blood-brain barrier and helps stimulate the production of a nervous-system calming neurotransmitter called gamma aminobutyric acid or GABA for short.
GABA helps ease anxiety, restore calm, and boost cognition. It could even help you sleep better and alleviate mood disorders. And it may be the key reason the new study found tea has major mood benefits.
The trick is to commit to making tea a DAILY part of your routine. But don’t worry, if you’re a coffee fan like me, there’s no reason to give up your java fix. Simply make the switch to tea after your morning cup of coffee and alternate between the two throughout the day.
Now keep in mind if you’re already battling depression, you’ll need something more than tea to help lift yourself out of the dumps. Speak to a naturopathic physician about ways to beat those blues, including mood-boosting natural therapies such as high-dose fish oil and 5-HTP.
