We all start looking around for the magic bullet as we get older. You know the one I’m talking about. That ONE THING that can help stop cognitive decline, block dementia, save our brain, and preserve our quality of life.
I have bad news. It’s a bit more complicated than that. But I have good news too. Protecting your brain and preserving what makes you who you are isn’t too hard, either.
New research spots what may be the best way yet to hold on to your memory even if you’re already experienced some mild cognitive impairment.
It’s NOT that single “magic bullet” cure. But it IS pretty darn close. Because everything you need to do to claim this benefit isn’t just super-easy. In many cases, it’s also something you should be doing anyway.
Even better? You’re probably taking at least some of these basic actions already.
Avoid dementia with these easy actions
The fancy term for it… and the one used in the new study… is “multidomain interventions.” And it means taking a few different actions at the same time rather than relying on a single “magic bullet” approach.
Instead of fighting dementia with a single supplement… one addition to your diet… a specific type of exercise… or certain mindfulness practices… you need to cover several or even all of those areas at once.
But don’t worry. I promise it’s nowhere near as tough as that might sound. Even better, it WORKS. It can help slow and, in some cases, even reverse cognitive impairment.
I’ll even help you get started. First, let’s take a look at what these interventions consist of.
In the new study, they were defined as two or more of the following practices:
- brain training
- physical exercise
- nutritional supplements
- mind-body exercises
- exercise with music
- social engagement
- education
They could either be done simultaneously or one right after the other. But alone no single one of them made a whole lot of difference. It needed to be a double down (or more) approach to slash dementia risk.
It’s when two or more were strung together that the magic really started to happen
Multiple approaches done at once led to small-to-medium improvements in critical areas, including global cognition, executive function, memory, and verbal fluency.
The study couldn’t pinpoint if one option was better than another or how long they needed to be done. Only that the combined effects are more potent than any single one.
Protect your brain with the “multidomain” approach
If you’re experiencing any degree of cognitive impairment, decline, or dementia consider trying this approach yourself. And if you’re not, this same approach could help prevent it.
Plus, these actions aren’t just healthy. Some of them are downright fun, too.
For example, brain training can include your favorite puzzles, online games, or specialty programs designed to help enhance memory and cognitive function. There are a number to choose from, and some are downright addictive.
Supplements can include the things you’ve seen me share for good brain function over the years, including omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, and curcumin.
Social engagement doesn’t have to be something formal. Just chatting with friends and loved ones counts because conversation is actually a GREAT natural brain stimulant.
And don’t forget to fit in some physical activity each day one of the best dementia fighting moves of all.
When combined with a decent diet of natural foods and stimulating activities such as reading books and magazines and listening to music, your brain will have the best shot at staying steel-trap strong for many more years to come.
But remember, there can be many different causes of cognitive impairment and decline, including drug side effects. So be sure to speak with a doctor… ideally a naturopathic physician… who can help pinpoint what’s behind your own brain burps and work with you to fix it.
Want even more help protecting and supporting your brain? Our friends and colleagues at the Institute for Natural Healing (INH) have you covered.
The folks at INH have curated an absolute treasure trove of information on how everyday folks like you and me can improve brain function. They’ve combined the very best of that life-changing, memory-saving knowledge into one comprehensive protocol that’s, frankly, the best I’ve ever seen.
