Gulp… glub… sip… SHRINK!
America’s favorite “diet” option is hiding a terrible secret.
With every sip of sugar-free diet soda… with every slurp of diet cola… you could end up losing a little bit of gray matter.
Yes, gray matter – as in BRAIN matter – wiped out by sugar-free soft drinks.
You may as well be pouring a bubbling black can of poison directly inside your skull. And if you’ve been drinking this stuff yourself, it’s time to pour it down the drain instead. Otherwise, you’re sending your risk for dementia climbing.
Study links diet soda to dementia
It’s easy to see why diet sodas are so popular. They promise all the taste of your favorite soft drinks. But without the sugar and without the calories.
And if you’re trying to lose a little weight… or you’re battling diabetes or pre-diabetes… switching to diet soda may seem like a no brainer.
But the whole thing’s just another Madison Avenue marketing lie.
That diet soda might not have sugar. And it might not have calories either. But it’s every bit as bad as regular soda.
And in some ways, it’s even worse!
Diet soft drinks have already been linked to heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. Plus, ironically, given the lack of calories and sugar, they’re ALSO associated with weight gain and diabetes, too.
And that might be just the beginning of the risks because the latest research links diet soda to the kinds of changes in the brain that are behind cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease.
In other words, diet soda drinking could raise your risk for dementia.
Scientists conducted MRIs on volunteers who drank diet soda and compared them to the scans of those who didn’t.
Sure enough, the soda-slurpers had more “shrinkage” in the brain. And this wasn’t the shrink we expect to see in an aging brain either. It was the kind of loss of brain volume that leads to cognitive struggles and dementia.
Swap your diet drink for one of THESE instead
Here’s the scariest part: This damage was detected even in folks who had just ONE diet soda per day!
The type of diet soda didn’t matter. Neither did the kind of no-cal chemical sweetener in it. ALL of the sodas tested were linked to these changes in the brain, meaning NONE of them are safe.
But that doesn’t mean you have to stick to plain old water.
You can dress up your H2O with infusions of fruit. Just cut up some melon or berries, drop them into a pitcher and fill it up the rest of the way with filtered water.
Let it chill in the fridge for a day, and you’ll get just a hint of fruit flavor. It’s enough to satisfy a craving, but without the risks (this same trick works with seltzer). Cucumber can also give your water a unique and refreshing taste.
Other great options are coffee and tea. Serve them hot, drink them iced, or mix it up. Just don’t mix any sugar or artificial sweeteners in and you’ll get all the great tastes without the additives.
