They’re practically etched into our brains at this point.
Those first coronavirus symptoms that are supposed to raise the red flag for this dangerous disease are easy to spot…
- high fever
- dry coughing
- shortness of breath
And by all accounts, it’s true. For most folks, they ARE the first warning signs.
But some people report very different coronavirus symptoms, some of which you’ve read about right here in Healthier Talk before. And now a new report reveals how SENIORS could have some of the most unusual warning signs of all.
They’re NOT what you’d expect. You DON’T hear about them on the news. And they’re NOT what most people – even many doctors – are watching for.
But they could be YOUR first coronavirus symptoms. And spotting them early on can give you a chance to take quick action to get the help you need fast.
Coronavirus symptoms EVERY senior should know
A new report from doctors at Emory University notes that seniors often have different symptoms than younger folks for many common infections and illnesses. And it turns out the COVID-19 is no exception.
One doctor told CNN that they’re finding older folks with coronavirus symptoms no one would’ve linked to COVID-19.
- unusual behavior
- sleeping more
- eating less (or not at all)
- speaking problems
Notice anything about that list? Many of those symptoms can ALSO match mild cognitive impairment, drug side effects, or other issues of aging. And that means they might be dismissed by doctors as nothing “too unusual” as a result.
Don’t dismiss them. It turns out there’s a good reason these unusual signs could turn out to be coronavirus symptoms.
As one doctor from Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine explained to CNN, aging – and the underlying conditions that often come with it – can alter the immune response to infection.
And those SAME underlying conditions can cause other changes inside the body that can lead to coronavirus symptoms that are different than those you’d see in younger people. For example, some seniors may not cough because they no longer have the same cough “reflex.”
Other unusual COVID-19 symptoms to watch for
Those aren’t the only unusual symptoms, either. In any age group – from young adults to seniors – coronavirus infection could be marked by…
… and more.
It could come with the coughing and fever you expect. Or it might not.
These findings are just one more reason to be alert for ANYTHING that seems unusual or unexpected not only in yourself but in those around you. Remember, the best way to get through this difficult time is to look out for each other. So please share this report with all of your loved ones.
Reach out to a doctor if anything seems off-kilter, even if it ISN’T one of the “typical” coronavirus symptoms. And call 911 if something ever feels urgently wrong.
