Severe asthma attacks dramatically reduced
Researchers from Queen Mary University of London say taking a vitamin D supplement—in addition to your standard allergy meds—could dramatically slash your risk for severe asthma attacks that send you to the hospital.
And for the 300 million folks battling this disease worldwide, that’s not just a relief. Because with 400,000 folks dying from severe asthma attacks every year, it could be a literal life saver.
The study published in the journal The Lancet Respiratory Medicine crunched and analyzed the data from seven different randomized controlled trials testing the use of vitamin D supplements.1

The researchers found that supplementing with vitamin D led to a…
- 30 percent drop in asthma attacks requiring steroids
- 50 percent reduction in the risk of an asthma attack requiring an ER visit or hospitalization
In other words, your chance of being rushed to the ER for an asthma attack could be slashed in HALF simply by taking an affordable vitamin D supplement!
Experts say it’s likely the D has such a dramatic effect because of something we’ve told you about many times before. (And the reason EVERYONE should be making sure to get enough of it.)
The vitamin’s ability to boost immune response.
Research has proven vitamin D helps fight off respiratory infections. Which means it naturally reduces the kind of irritating inflammation that can trigger an asthma attack.2.3
Severe asthma attacks plummeted 55%
The results were even more dramatic for folks who had low vitamin D levels to start with. Which, as a Healthier Talk reader, you may already know is quite common.
One study found on average over 41 percent of U.S. adults are deficient in D. And in some groups, deficiency can run as high as 82 percent.4
In the new study, researchers found those participants who had low levels of D were 55 percent less likely to suffer from severe asthma attacks once they started taking a vitamin D supplement.
In many cases, D recommendations are far too low according to Healthier Talk contributor Dr. Allan Spreen. That’s why he typically recommends 2,000 IUs of D3 daily, taken with a meal that contains fat to maximize its absorption.
