I might not be the most popular guy once I deliver this news. Después de todo, I know how much folks love their cellphones. But it’s a risk I’m willing to take if it saves a few lives.
Now don’t misunderstand me, I’ve been known to rely on a cellphone from time to time to stay in touch and up to date too. But the reality is, evidence that the radiation given off by these devices could raise our risk for cancer continues to grow.
And now yet another new study has linked cellphones to tumors.
This major new animal study has linked cellphone radiation to glioma brain tumors as well as rare malignant heart tumors called schwannomas in males.
Here’s how the researchers revealed that link.
From birth the test rodents were place in special containers that delivered radio frequency (RF) radiation for nine hours every day.
Now you might be thinking, “I NEVER spend nine straight hours talking on the phone!"
But let’s put things into perspective. The “phone” part of the word cellphone is really outdated. Most of us use our cells for far more than just chatting on the phone. We’re constantly using them to check emails, send texts, update our social media statuses, take videos and share pictures.
Most exposed to cellphone radiation for hours every day
De hecho, many of us never go anywhere without them in our pocket. (I even know some teenagers who sleep with them under their pillow!)
And that could be a problem because even when you’re not using your cellphone it is constantly shaking hands with nearby cell towers to download mail, check for texts and update its location.
En otras palabras, according to experts the nine hours of RF those rats were getting really isn’t all that different than the exposure many of us have every day.
Now as you’d expect this latest study once again has the cellphone industry in defense mode. Industry folks were quick to point out that the number of diagnosed gliomas hasn’t jumped despite our dependence on our pocket phones.
Here’s the problem with that reasoning. Bien, there’s actually two of them.
Tumors can take many years to develop
First, we’re talking about slow-growing tumors here. They can take many years… heck, even DECADES… to form and be detected. And second, although cellphones became more common starting in the late 90s, those early “dumb” phones didn’t emit nearly as much radiation as today’s never-off versions.
En otras palabras, pueden transcurrir muchos años antes de empezar a ver el true impact of cellphone radiation on the public. And at that point we may be well past the point of return, facing a global cancer epidemic.
Now I don’t want to cause panic, and I realize it might feel tempting at this point to just toss your cellphone into a corner and hide. But while pulling the plug on these devices isn’t actually a bad idea, going cold-turkey simply isn’t a realistic option for many folks.
The good news is that you don’t have to.
You can consider switching to an old-fashioned “dumb” phone. This would allow you to still be reachable, but reduce your radiation exposure. Plus many folks report a great sense of relief when they give up being connected 24/7.
3 steps to slash your cellphone radiation exposure
But for those of us who are going to keep our smartphones there are still several small changes you can make that could make a big difference in your cancer risk.
Step 1: Break the Bond:
Break the habit of keeping your cellphone on your body at all times. Constant exposure could be increasing your risk of tumors as well as potentially thinning bone and damaging sperm.
Step 2: Warm up to Wires:
Most offices and many of our homes still have an “old-fashioned” wired lines. You can cut way down on your exposure when at home or in the office by ditching the cell and reaching for the wired phone instead.
Step 3: Buffer your Brain:
Stop holding your cellphone up to your head. Help protect your brain from cellphone radiation by utilizing the speakerphone function. Or try using headphones instead (there are lots of great options out there these days).
