WORSE than cancer? That hardly seems possible, right?
Well, in a “hold my pill bottle” moment, the drug industry has stepped up to that challenge. They’ve done the impossible in all the wrong ways. Because a new warning is sounding the alarm that a drug that’s supposed to TREAT cancer can actually CAUSE something even worse.
Now to be more accurate, it’s not just a problem with a single drug we’re talking about here. This red alert actually involves an ENTIRE CLASS of medications that sick and weak patients rely on to treat deadly tumors.
But instead of recovering from their cancer, they could find themselves fighting off one of the most severe cardiovascular complications possible. And believe it or not, that’s not even the worst news of all.
Because it turns out those very same drugs might not work against cancer very well, either.
When the cancer cure makes you WORSE
It sounds like a nightmare. And that’s because it is. The new warning finds certain cancer drugs can weaken your blood vessels’ walls, leading to aneurysms and artery dissections.
An aneurysm is when a weak spot in your vessel fills with blood, bulging and expanding like a balloon. And you know what happens when balloons get too full, right? KABOOM!
On the other hand, an artery dissection is when the wall inside the blood vessel splits, sending blood flowing through the inner layers. Think of it as a slow leak inside the walls of your home. The space between the walls slowly fills with water, and you don’t even know it’s happening.
Either condition can lead to clots or ruptures. Both are often deadly. And either one could be caused by common cancer drugs called antiangiogenic agents.
The new study finds the drugs can nearly TRIPLE the risk of these life-threatening conditions. Most cases involved either the aorta, which is your main artery, or the cerebral arteries.
One in four cases led to death… another 18 percent were life-threatening… and a quarter of the cases resulted in long-term hospitalization.
The study named at least 14 drugs connected to this risk, including:
But like I said, the worst part of it may not even be the risk itself. It’s that the drugs don’t seem to be panning out to be all that great against cancer, either.
BIG promises little results
One of the drugs linked to this new risk, sunitinib, went up against a rival medication in kidney cancer survivors. The goal was to see which delivered the longest disease-free survival.
The winner? NEITHER. A third set of patients… given a placebo… outlasted them ALL.
Another drug, bevacizumab, was so ineffective for breast cancer that it had its approvals pulled. But because it’s still on the market for other forms of the disease, docs can and do still prescribe it.
It’s not always easy to understand your options with cancer. And there can be a LOT of pressure to try new, expensive, and highly aggressive drugs. Or submit to major surgeries.
And don’t get me wrong. Many cases might even need one, or both, of those options. But at the same time, many DON’T.
So if you or someone you care about is ever diagnosed with cancer, don’t buckle under the pressure. Do your homework… examine ALL your options… and ALWAYS get a second opinion.
Then, once you decide on a treatment, make sure to include an integrative or naturopathic physician on your care team. He can keep an eye on the REST of your body to help reduce the toxic side effects and other problems that often accompany cancer treatment. And he can help you with your recovery using treatments such as this “energy therapy” for post cancer pain I wrote about recently.
