Ladies, we spend practically our whole lives worried about breast cancer.
We get screened, squeezed, and poked for decades. We sit through a seemingly endless sea of pink-washed “awareness” campaigns. And many of us have watched at least one loved one struggle through a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
And all that adds up to a lifetime of angst and anxiety.
But I’ve got some good news. If you’ve unlocked the achievement of reaching your Golden Years, it could FINALLY be time to put that tension behind you.
Because if you’re past the age of 70, new research shows you can likely let your guard down and relax a bit.
It turns out the most common form of the disease almost certainly WON’T hurt you. Meaning you could choose to opt out of the stress and skip aggressive treatments such as sickening radiation.
Past 70? Stop stressing about breast cancer
There’s an ugly little secret lurking beneath most modern research. The scientists IGNORE older folks. From drug studies to cancer research, seniors often get the shaft.
More often than not, seniors are totally left out of studies, even if they’re among those most likely to be treated. So doctors make decisions for older patients every day based on research done almost exclusively on younger people.
Now, a new report is helping to correct the record. It focused almost entirely on older women. The research targeted ER-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer cases in patients over the age of 70.
Some of the women just had a biopsy but no actual cancer treatment. The others had radiotherapy. Radiotherapy is an often debilitating procedure that can leave women with ugly side effects, including pain and skin problems.
Now, let’s face it. Major side effects are no picnic no matter what your age. But as we get older, side effects can absolutely destroy your quality of life. Even worse, they can leave you struggling for the rest of your days.
And what do you get for it? Well, according to the science, NOT more years.
Make the right treatment decision for YOU
The new study found that the treatment didn’t matter. The survival rates were pretty much identical whether the women had the treatment or just had the biopsy.
Some docs are finally getting the message; the rate of radiotherapy for breast cancer has dropped a little in recent years. But it hasn’t fallen nearly enough.
More than half of older women with these early-stage tumors are still being squeezed through the radiotherapy wringer. And that typically leaves them struggling with lingering side effects but no apparent benefit.
So if you’re an older lady diagnosed with breast cancer, don’t let them pressure you to make a quick decision. And certainly, don’t panic.
Take some time to understand ALL of your options. And visit another doctor… preferably an integrative medicine physician… for a second opinion.
Then, with the help of your doctor, you can choose the best action for your case, even if it means no action at all.
And men, the ladies aren’t the only ones being overtreated. Click here to discover how that prostate treatment you’re being strong-armed into might be nothing but a scam.
