If there’s anything more sinister than cancer, I don’t know what it is.
And ladies, if you’ve fought breast cancer in the past, I’ve got some concerning news about this deadly disease that you need to hear.
If you think you won that battle and have a clean bill of health… even if you’ve aced every test in the book for years… you’re not out of the woods yet.
New research reveals how breast cancer could still come back to haunt you. And we’re not just talking about years later but even DECADES after the supposed all-clear.
But I’m not here to deliver a new round of fear and paranoia. There’s plenty of that to be found everywhere else right now.
No, I’m here today with a message of HOPE. Because there are some simple steps, you can take right now that could help lower your risk and reduce your odds of this disease ever returning.
The hidden danger of breast cancer
Cancer of any kind is notorious for its “sleeper cells.”
Those are the cells that break out of the tumor and hide. Sometimes they take cover near the original site, or sometimes it’s in another part of the body entirely.
And that’s exactly how you can have a tumor removed, be deemed “cancer-free” by every measure, and yet STILL face another battle with the disease years later.
The new study shows how breast cancer “sleeper cells” can snooze for a very long time. Then they can wake up and turn deadly in a hurry.
Women who’ve defeated breast cancer face the highest risk in the early years, just as we’ve seen in other studies. The most significant risk is within 10 years. And a little more than half of all cases of recurrence happen within 15 years.
But that means nearly half strike after those 15 years. In fact, some recurrences have been found up to 32 years after the initial cancer.
The study also spotted the biggest risk factors for a late recurrence:
- larger tumors (more than 20 mm)
- lymph node-positive disease
- estrogen receptor-positive cancers
Women with grade one cancer and four or more positive lymph nodes face the biggest danger. Meanwhile, grade three cancers without any lymph nodes affected had the lowest risk of a long-term recurrence.
Reduce your recurrence risk with simple steps
But really, no matter which forms of cancer you’ve had in the past, avoiding an encore should be Priority Number One well into the future. And fortunately, there are some easy ways to help steer the odds in your favor.
Start with the basics. A healthy diet full of antioxidant-rich foods and as few ultra-processed ones as you can manage is a good first step.
One of my favorite antioxidants is green tea. A regular green tea habit can potentially help fight cancer and has a reputation for being especially good at cutting the odds of a recurrence.
Plus, you get bonus benefits. Green tea is also loaded with natural age-defying compounds and may help protect the heart, brain, and more.
Avoid sugary drinks and keep your blood sugar in check, in general, to avoid potentially fueling a new tumor.
Next, avoid being sedentary. You don’t have to become a gym rat. But make sure you get up and move a bit every day. Try doing one of these 5 easy and effective exercises for out-of-shape beginners once every hour during the day.
Switch to personal care products that are paraben, phthalate, and petrolatum-free, all of which could have hormonal effects on the body. Limit your use of products with chemical fragrances. And avoid plastic water and food containers, which can contain hormone-disrupting chemicals, whenever possible.
